Day 10 training

48 hour challenge

After Kenpo, I ran 1.1 miles. It felt good to continue. That was at 4.6mph. If I get short pressed for time, I will just start focusing on the speed and move from my endurance forte to speed weakpoint. Is that how speed is gained when timepressed?

With animals, speed and strength are not used at once, since the sprint tires one, the other one waits with energy for the relay effort. How do they plan, who goes for which role, the timing and the execution. Strength in numbers.

Three Lessons from Girlscouts camp

The scheduling and the organization orchestra was perfect. Building up to that level of organizing an event is extraordinary and a lesson for another day.

1. Always carry your magic with you

I have a magical songs book picked up form a Girlscouts leader meeting.
At a camp, when other troops were doing skits, I wanted my troop to prticipate too. I recalled the existence of the book and dug it out of the big box.
I asked if anyother adult knew any music. I gave it to one of he girls who seemed to enjoy, reading aloud from it. She even got other girls to dance to that music when I asked them to practise. The book had a small print, which meant, one would read from it and others follow. One of the other girls didnt want to copy. That was the best course present. Eventually on the stage, they all did so well. The followers were particularly loud, to reach the large audience. The choice of the song - Every Girl Everywhere by Melinda Caroll and a Funky Chicken. One insirational, another fun.
Back home, the book charmed my younger one to make up her own lyrics.
It is a magical book that made the girl a star, which she didnt believe that she was.

2. Repeat, Trepeat, Frepeat

We learned Herme the worm song earlier in the day at fire safety station where the camp counselors shared, when asked about a camp song. While waiting for skits sectiona nd behind the scenes (literally, as the kitchen was behind the podium for the Icecream in a Ziploc), the leader making all the little girls sing this song, was a learning moment for the rest.

The firesafety workshop was well built with theory upfront, demo with the concepts, no matches involved and in the end a treat involving graham crackers, chocolate rocks. And  a summary, who wouldnt drill this concept inside their head, with so many competitions. I am so using this for any workshop. Ace presenters.

3. Repeat, peat, eat
If you know how to sing the There Was A Crocodile song, then you will see whats going on with the title. This is a minus song where you keep subtracting the animal. Sounds like a very coder game, where you are removing any pattern that matches an animal progressively, one at a time. A leader urged her daughter to do this, so little girls could be introduced to the song. Leadership in the making.

The girls didnt enjoy the field activities. My work here is cutout for me, Operation Game Face patch.

Day 9 training

Miles to do - 2

Same done at 4.5mph. Close to 90% of my heart rate. Thats orange training right there. Wonder how the gains will look like over the course of months.
This is the upper body workout I did for about 10-15 min. I wanted to stop but I couldnt because of the coach who kept pushing.
Listen to your coach.
I am your coach :)

Day 8 training

Miles to do 2

This got gobbled up with p90x legs and back workout. It had lots of varieties of lunges but not this deficit lunge.

Day 7 training

Miles to do- 3

I did with running in place. Added some more at slow place for good measure and recovery. This while watching Wales triathlon. Fun to go alonside elite athletes and wonderful locations.

Day 6 training

Miles to do 2

I started out with kenpo and hence could only do 1.1 mile after that. Totally wanted to do the rest at home.

Day 5 training

Its 2.5 mile today.

I was very prepared to do the remaining of what I cant do, later in the day at home.
I started with elliptical. After 20 min of it, when I got the treadmill, I finished about 0.6 miles. Today's improvement is not increaisng 0.1mph only at the 0.1 mile increment but also when the time hits the next minute.
I took a semi fake bathroom and water break. And then kept my golas as 1.7mi atleast as that was the last reached. Somewhere along the way, I realised my runners hold free up and I knew I was going to finish it all. There was another runner in the background, which gave me extra phillip.
When I was looking at some benefits of cycling, another runner said that yes it has all the benefts of running minus the impact. When I told him about my training program, he thought that I might become a runner.
Other friends are asking me to join them. They are saying things like improving time. Here I am, making it barely.

Runners yoga

Day 3 training

Runners stretch to Runners yoga.

I have not heard of Marathon Des Sables before.

Today I had to do 2 miles running. the training specifically said no skipping training, even on a runny day. I mean rainy day.

I dont want to run on concrete as much, so I will be looking for a grass park.

Today, its got to be indoors.

I cannot emphasise enough on the power of mirroring. When I saw two people running on the race course and talking, I realised that is what I need for today.

2 miles on treadmill was tracked as 2.5 miles on smartphone.

I have to do 2.5 miles today.

Within 4 minutes of a clip, I was making good progress on the kitchen mat. In the background, its London dry trees. In no time, I was done with the running and then came the most important part.

 Runners yoga

While doing this I could feel the stretches and I knew this needed to be done so I wont have the cramps in the calves later in the day.

On one side, one of the stretches was all too much. It was easy on the other side. Patience.

Did you know that there is a  record for running nonstop on treadmill?

Paneer fried rice

Paneer fried rice
Gobhi butter masala shows how a basic Makhani is made. Some paneer recipes I saw had this same thing going on. I chose paneer and cauliflower as the vegetables for the day. As both turned out to be similar recipes, I moved to Paneer fried rice. Paneer is marinated and then shallow fried. Cauliflower too had to be treated the same way, but I skipped that step. This time while prepping, i had to tell myself many times, that the paneer does not go into the gravy. it goes into the rice.

Its called runners stretch for nothing

Day 2 training

last training experience of 2 mile run was a 1.7 mi run at 4.8mph. Whats ins tore for today? Since last time was the first day, I kept moving the speed till I realised that 4.8 was my comfortable speed. Physically it was. Mentally I had to keep telling to not give up. When the last person in the gym left at that point, I gave up and felt that if he stayed longer, possibly I could have pushed it further.

I was at 0.96 mile and then my hand snagged the safety clasp. My friend was waiting for another exercise with me. I wondered if it still counts, if I pick up the running after the break of another exercise. I am going with 'if it is still in the timezone of the final day running' then it is. Agree or not?

We did some Kenpo. After that back to the running (I am told that 4 -5 mph is a fast walk or jog. Each to his/her own.). I started at 4.2mph and then I realised with every 0.1mi I could increase 0.1mph. It turned out to be a game. I was so comfortable, that I could run even more.

Are you looking for an exercise playlist? I realised that the mind goes hypervigilant during running. I have watched Despacito song many times, but this is the first time I noticed a girl in the background dancing, standing out with the crowds help.

Later in the day, I had cramps in the left leg. I should remember to do the runners stretch.

Have you wondered when people say our bodies were made to move... Our moving joints and all...

Burning fat in gym

Lately I have been worried with an increasing trend in body fat % but I think I found the magic which keeps it at bay. Cardio. 32 min of elliptical followed by Standing Abs workout - 10 minute fat burn. That seems to have done the trick.
Standing abs turns out to be a good choice as a suffice to the exercise. Usually its a 5 min workout repeated twice. Its funny to watch the momentum drop from the first to the second set. The first jumping jacks - I put too much vigor into them. In the second one, my reaction time slowed down so much that it was time for the next move. I didn't miss it. Loved the different take on woodcutter. it almost seemed like a dance.

Training to run a 4.2 mile.

I happened to run in place for a mile on a whim
Did another 0.5mi another day
1.7 mile at 4.8mph, 0.3 mile jogging in place

The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart

" Never for a single moment
Betray your credo or pretend" - poem by

This story is by Julie Andrews and it goes:

The color palette is eye catching. Its all pink and then suddenly its all green.
I had trouble deicphering one page, where I thought based upon the table spread being too huge and similar that eahc page was a different scene, but its a scene on two pages.

The sparkle part is very well done. Appreciating the best in each, even the ones who trouble you where you be true to your credo of recognizing the sparkle in others even if you have differences with others.

A great mixup adds reality to the story. The fairy princess has to get creative which is when her true element comes out.

Some cute ideas for class Valentine party too.

Timed workout

When you see a 15 min 20 min 30 min 45 min workout, do you think its so long or do you see that as flexibility to fit the program in to the time that you have?

Volte face workout

I thought I was getting into the pattern of 10-15 elliptical and then 20-30 min stregnth training. Surprise, Surprise, I wanted to do The perfect Total Body workout. Started off well with the lunge warmups in different planes and then when i went to squat, I could feel the strain in the back of the upper arm. Reduced weight, still the same feeling. Thats it for strength training. Its recovery time. Who do you call, in times like these? Shaun T with 8-Minute Flat-Abs Workout was a good change. While waiting for the next exercise to start, I was using bridge as my neutral waiitng posiiton. After that. Then it was this 10 Minute Standing ABS WORKOUT // No Equipment. Liked it with the music. I could feel that I was doing an exercise with impact. I was sweating and feeling the heat. This repeated but I was into it and didnt mind it one bit. Loved the standing pike exercise. Even in Shaun Ts the first exercise takes you from bridge to pike laying down. Its the reverse of  another of his pike pushup where you are on your all fours. Shaun T's exercise had some chair exercises which were fun and you could feel the core. Great workout all in all.

Around the World

Continuing my kettle bell mania, I had fun with the around the world move where you have to move the kettlebell around you. For this and the russian swing I used 25 pounds but for the American swing where yout ake the kettlebell overhead, I only used 15 pounds. For the deadlift when I had to activate the hips and legs, I could feel the effect. The workout did get tough, but it was empowering too without being too easy. I liked it that the other direction in the around the world, counted as another move. Happy exercising.
I started with 10 min elliptical and possibly 12 min of the kettlebell workout. It was fun to feel both athletic with the elliptical as well as strong with the strength training.

Personal mastery line below speaks to me about my artist journey where I had to clarify to myself why and how of learnign to write. In that journey, there was disorientation and then orientation. After I got the hang of the ropes, I put it aside which is probably all the time before reorientation.

More workout

Today we did the p90x total body plus abs. Usually I stop at the kids play. But today we went through it. 3x3 (3 squats and other things) and 1x1 (one push up, one pull up)  were tough and fun. You get through them at your pace. Spiderman jumps where I started jumping after a couple of mimicing jumps. You do these for 2 minutes each. After all this, I wanted to do a bit more strenth training especially after liking 10 min kettlebell workout previously. I only did a few minutes of Full body workout  with kettlebell, but it was fun. I want to understand the motivation of these various workouts.
I felt my core stronger, as I was asking more of it.

Happy red

For a quick wakeup, we did about 10 min of game day. I dont know how Shaun T comes up with all these oh so tough moves, but thats the challenge. wonderful part of it. Some are hard to imagine with speed and doable only slowly and even that gets tiring.
After that p90x total body seemed like being fair to all parts of the body. I skipped some of the moves as I had done them already in the preceding section.
It was fun that you do some strength training and then you do other moves where you dont hold anything, just your body weight. I did about 20 minutes of it and was all red in the face. Good, happy red.
For a good measure, I did elliptical to cant stop the feeling.

Less is more

Sometimes finding the right workout for the time that you have, can make it feel like you won the Tetris game. I was trying out an isometric workout (I was warm by then with a 30 min elliptical). when I realise dthat I had t repeat what I had just done 2 more times, I looked for kettlebell workouts. At first I thought 20 min, but there wasnt that much time. 10 min kettlebell workout seemed just right. It is well structured too. You end it with three sets of kettlebell pull throughs. I was silly the rest of the day that in technical terms I exercised the posterior chain. Between these sets was a tricep, what else can you ask for? And I am still in the high of feeling that I am an athlete and getting stronger.

I remind myself of this, but nah not there yet. Sometimes I am just glad that someone else does the hardwork of counting in all the exercise videos. Heard of it in Arnold schwarzenegger speech.

Later I was thinking of why BodyFit by Amy felt good to work with. Well, its better than a book even with wonderful pictures. Especially with strength workouts. Real people, not too televised.

I think its the neuron mirroring part of having a person workout alongside, even though you are the one trying to do the atchup. Attic Mystery no. 7 at 5:57 is a very funny riddle of how you think the world is like you and vice a versa that you are like the world you are in.

After a week of cold and no exercise, I started elliptical yesterday and I knew that I was going to feel it this morning. Its just weird to have to feel that as a person who worksout atleast 4 days a week.

Atomic Habits

It is always fun and insightful to read about habits.

I felt great after reading these different ways of looking at my workout. Yay, I am an athlete.
Each time you start a workout, you are an athlete.
Instead of “I need to go run in the morning,” say “It’s time to build endurance and get fast”
I listen to music during ellipticla workout, so I can find more fun workout music. Habit Loop right there. But we should be careful of not falling into the dependency of music or heart rate tracker. have you heard of Shapa?

When I lost weight, many thought it was my will power. It was actually reuslts. But I was fortunate that the results never landed in the valley of disappointment. But I do recognise the valley when I have tried different diets and when it does not yield results, you start questioning the diet.

Lessons from Lets go Fishin

Have you veer played the Lets go Fishin'
I have seen my dad play it with kids.
I might have played it earlier and given up on it for not seeming pliant.
Today when i played it it felt great.
Lessons:

1. Focus I had to focus. I told my kid the same whne she asked me how I caught so many. In the next run, she caught more than me
2. Know when to Strike Time it to catch the fish when its mouth is wide open
3. Avoid Premature Picking This is where you have to get hyper aware and do opposite of the speed you used in the previous step. You have to wait. You have to wait till you know your stick is grasped by the fish.

All this movement makes the fish come live.
After learning these, I was so excited about the game that we should have face offs and tournaments with different levels like semi finals and finals.

The Memory of Food

I made Aloo Kofta biryani after looking for a special dish to make with potatoes. I passed Aloo Palak biryani, even though I had palak too. There was this potatoes that were fried. Also tomatoes added to palak. A while ago thre was thing to not mix palak with tomatoes. I could ahve skipped the tomatoes.
Even the aloo kofta biryani called for adding blended onions which I didnt to reduce the number of tasks. Eventhough the recipe calls its biryani, it is not elaborate like the draining the boiled rice.
The first step of cooking rice with salt and other spices took me back to almost 30 years where once our granddfather picke dus up from hostel. he cant stand buses because of the fuel smell and would always take us home by train. Durig those train rides, he would have us eat slightly salted rice. I was stunned to be taken that far ago into my life by the neural pathways.
After cooking the Aloo Kofta biryani with a friend, she introduced me to Persian Tahdig.

Making Art

You dont have to be born an artist, to enjoy the process of making art.

Making art is like walking which clears up your head.

Getting into the habit of making art.

Watching a cake being frosted at costco, I was reminded of chocolate cake frosting and wondered id the baker was enjoying as much as I had. Is it fun when it is work?

Dont leave crumbs

In 5 rules for the rest of your life, actor Matthew Mcconaughey introduced his rule number 3 as

Dont Leave Crumbs

1. The bed that needs to be done. Instread of being reminded of it every time pass you it and taking up your mental space, get to it and forget it. Another advantage of making your bed. You can change the world by making your bed says Admiral William H McRaven author of  Make your bed

2. When feasible, make an early payment that you have to make as a surprise gift to you. Come next eyar, you will be so proud of yourself that you paid it early than later.

3. Does something keep coming to your mind? Intent of student return. If its coming up againa nd againa nd you think you should write an email to the teacher. Maybe it is available online. Fill it up and forget it.

To feel small

If you ever want to feel small in the world, if the sky, water and aerial view havent already done that
