 Today wasnt the best day in terms of energy, but I still pressed on. Just moving along with Tony Horton and team for the legs and back workout and walking after that, made me feel good.

I've been feeling a little less than in terms of how much I know and understand about the world. What are some topics I should start researching to broaden my knowledge & be able to partake in multiple conversations with different topics?

 

You can start off learning about mental models. Farnam steet  blog is a great place to start. As you learn and make connections, make notes too. Follow your curiosities too. Once when I learned about how bulldogs need c-section, the next time I went to the library and saw In the Womb: Animals by Michael Sims, I had to read it. You can keep building on this journey with more structured reads of online courses on topics of your interest.

How do you stay motivated learning to draw even when you are noticing no progression?

 Drawing with Your Artist's Brain: Learn to Draw What You See, Not What You Think You See by Carl Purcell is a book I have tried as well as gifted to others. My kids get frustrated easily when the drawing doesnt turn out like it is in kidsarthub. I tell them that they have to persevere.

In your case, keep trying different styles. I am very inspired when I see mini logos. If you have any fascination like that, try those. Keep collecting them in your journal. Sometimes even though the drawing could be better, its the actual piece or the catching of that fancy of that inspiring drawing moment that motivates me.

Try some for fun and showoff. I was told that you shouldnt always ask kids questions that they know answer to. 20% should be ahrd and about 10% should be the ones that they dont know answers to, so they are always on the quest of learning more.

Its the not getting it right, that should be the motivating factor to get the drawing even more better. Share it with others too. If they appreciate your effort, you might be motivated in pursuing it more.

It always seems to me that I am not developing, at first I set big goals and plan to finish them in a month, although usually such goals are completed in months and not in 1 month, then I want to take a break from this?

 You will benefit from the SMART goalsetting approach.

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound

If your goals meet this description, then you aill have realistic timelines. Also have mileposts, so that you can celebrate those instead of coming to a full stop.

If it takes months longer, it means that you set unrealistic goals and it hurt your achievement in the process by demotivating you. Have challenging but SMART goals.

While doing intermittent fasting, can I eat junk food? If not, what are other stuff that I can eat for better results?

 If your goals of intermittent fasting are related to reducing insulin resistance, then first try getting rid of snacking on junk foods. Eat healthy main meals with good fats and protein so you have good satiety. Then you will not feel the energy crashes that call for snacking.

How should a beginner learn to appreciate or understand a poem? Is it not good to search for professional analysis immediately when I can't really feel anything particular after reading it? I don't have a good sense of appreciating poems.

Read the poem aloud. Sometimes I try to recall what I have read and see how the order of words is different. Thats one way I learn how the poet has used a different order of words and even the choice of words. As you understand the structure of the poem and you zone into it, you will get a good sense and state of mind of the poet. After this, feel free to do all the research.

What advice would you give to someone struggling to write?

 I remember this scene, sitting in a park frustrated over not being able to write. Then I did the next best thing. Jumped into reading. I would jot down good phrases of writing, lots of new words, personalities and things to learn of. Later when I had a chance, I took some writing courses too. After that things would just mix and match in brain with ideas to write.

What's the best tool for personal growth and self-development?

Look around you. Find stories of people who have overcome adversity or achieved great things. Seeing is believing. If you have can see examples of people changing lives in front of you, you know you can do it to. Ask them how they were motivated to change. If this is not a possibility, next is books and the big wide world.

How can I motivate myself to stretch more when I find it so boring?

 

If you can think of the good that is happening to the body part with stretching as well as actually feel the sensations in the body, then it will act like meditation and provide you more benefits.

  1. Take care of yourself By being healthy, you are making sure you dont get affected by common diseases that can be prevented by good health habits like nutrition, exercise, good sleep and so on.
  2. Take care of others You have the energy to take care of others. it could be children, elders, family and friends.
  3. Bring out your best When you are healthy, who dont realise it. Wait for a sick day or a time you have to deal with a prolonged illness, its like running on a half battery. When you are healthy, most likely you have good habits and discipline in place, which makes achieving your other goals easy. There are other benefits like being a role model for others with your vitality. Its a gift that you are able to share not just with self and family but with community too. I always point my kids to other walkers, joggers or runners during their school ride, they know that it is important to take care of your health daily.         “Steve’s final words were: 'Oh wow. Which actually gives a lasting solution to beating procrastination, "willpower" or "motivation"?

 We procrastinate mostly simple things without too much consequence. usually they have a deadline and we think we have time, not knowing that something else might happen that will prevent us from doing those simple chores.

Willpower and motivation should not be wasted on simple things that can be accomplished with a checklist. Willpower and motivation are powerful tools to reach goals that speak to us.

If you are able to get over your procrastination, you might view yourself as a reliable person. That is a worthwhile goal to feel good about yourself and others might notice and appreciate that too.

Only if it is that important, then call on your willpower or motivation. 

Beginner to fitness

Once you know where you are, you can use the FITT principles ie Frequency, Intensity, Time, 

and Type of the exercises needed for  better performance on your next fitness assessment.

If you don’t like working out, what kind of activities could you do that would fulfill the amount of exercise needed daily?

If you like walking, choose a place in the park with slight uphill and downhill, that incline and decline walk does magic for your heart rate and bonus, counts as exercise. Your smart watch can be you your friend here.

Another that can be done is try out different activities like kickboxing that are more like play. Dancing is another fun way to get movement. Tai chi, yoga are other healthy activities that I can think of, which can be done outdoors.

You can also add exercise into your daily activities by skipping the elevator, parking far, walking to the grocery store if its not too far. If its too far, get a ride from friend or family, if they are going that way.

Over the weekend, If the weather was good, I couldnt stay indoors, I would just keep walking.

How do you truly improve on one's craft?

 You can start off with the 10000 hours into it to get better. But what helps even more is if you can get feedback. If you take the feedback without feeling bad and working on it to improve, you will develop the craft even better. Also have mileposts and a jar list of all the ways you could try to portray your craft as you learn it. It might be showcasing it in a gallery or talking to experts in that field or even general audience with a bent to appreciate that craft. That way you will get others views and hopefully find encouragement.

How do you avoid getting depressed if you have no daily instant gratification?

 You can have small goals for each day that you meet if possible at around the same time. It could be simple things like meeting stand, move, exercise goals for the day. Start with 5 min goals, multiple times a day. Then you will start feeling the dopamine of achievement. When you think you got this in your bag, you will be ready for bigger goals. Movement will put you in a frame of mind of more hope and experimenting.

My experience with intermittent fasting

 Intermittent fasting has worked out well for me. In the past 3 months, I have lost about 13 pounds. I also exercise regularly and eat only main meals and avoid snacking. Some caveats of intermittent fasting are that growing kids and women who are planning to have kids, nursing, pregnant should not follow it.

The best thing about it is I do not feel the morning/afternoon eneergy crashes where I used to feel like I had to eat right away. Dr Eric Berg’s videos on insulance resistance convinced me to start doing the intermittent fasting. I have seen other people do intermittent fasting and their consistent results. After understanding that insulance resistance puts you on a conveyor belt to prediabetes, I didnt need any other reason. If possible get ok from your doctor too. It will be helpful if you can get any bloodwork after few months of practising it, just so that you are not stressing out your body unnecessarily.

Having early dinner is the first step if you want to get into intermittent fasting. You have to pick you eating window. Most people are probably at 12 hour eating window. Based on your experience, lifestyle and other factors, you can try to get that 10, 8 or 6 hour window until you reach your health goals. If you extend the window any day, it is not a big deal. It is probably good for your body, to vary it like that.

I also like that you lose a lot of fat with it and retain muscle.It takes a while to lose belly fat because initially you lose the visceral fat which is inside your body around the organs. Be patient and kind to self.

How can I avoid my trigger foods and carbs when it is my all-time favorite food to eat? I feel like I am addicted to carbs especially sweet ones.

 You have to approach this from two sides.

One is that how often and how much of your favorite food should you eat everyday? Assign your favorite foods as treats for a special day where you want to thnak yourself for some effort, for reaching a goal that is important to you. You should try to reach a sense of moderation with food. This can be reached with mindful eating. Paying attention to your food while eating (no TV, laptop or other distraction). Chewing your food slowly. Tyr to know the history of the food. Appreciate the food with gratitude.

The other is to add healthy fats and proteins to your meals so that you stay full longer and dont feel the need/cravings and can ignore the triggers when your body is already fueled with good nutrition.

If you know the Marshmallow Test, here's something more that you can add to that frameowrk - Whats bad about instant gratification?  Is it Marshmallow or Prune juice?
What are the best techniques or pointers to stop operating from an "instant gratification" mindset?

What are the benefits from delayed gratification?

I would come at it from a self-verbalization (telling yourself that waiting is good) Vs external verbalization (being told to wait) framework from the below pointed JSTOR article.

If you think that if you had told yourself that waiting is good (exercising will power or discipline, becuae you already know that waiting is good) or someone had told your that waiting is good (this is a case of not having the information i.e learning from others eg benefits of saving and so on) , then it is better to wait instead of going for instant gratification.

To figure if delayed gratification will make you enjoy something more later, to see if what you have at hand is a marshmallow or prune juice, you have to wait and watch. Some people read articles only from their “read later” section. This way they avoid the instant gratification of reading every article that they like it right away, They are gicing themselves a chance of that interest going down if they wait.

How do you know you are consistent in whatever endeavor you undertake?

 Making a schedule for something that we want to do and following it is the inout side of making things happen. The output side of it is the results and further goals and challenges.

If you leave it to memory, then you only realise after you have missed it, that you have missed it. Put the activity on your calendar or make some auto pathways that right after this time, I head towards gym no matter what. Or if you have to take vitamins, have them in a place where you cant miss seeing it.

Weekly or monthly check-ins can ensure if you are following your endeavor consistently. Count the streak of consistency. If needed reward yourself for desired behavior.

I am only asking for the clock to be turned back less than a century?

Do you know the effects of snacking? Study finds dopamine, biological clock link to snacking, overeating and obesity. Also the energy had from snacks turned easily into fat. If you are trying to get healthy, then you know what to do. By adding healthy fats to your main meals, you can skip snacking. It is a good freedom to aim for. Another study was on Brain Activity Associated With Regulating Food Cravings Predicts Changes in Self-Reported Food Craving and Consumption Over Time.

That brings us to dopamine.

I just had Amul lassi which seemed to have rose water flavor. When I found this Amul Pure Ghee, it made consider why we bought this. It is a convenience to have ghee. It is not easy to keep collecting the malai/cream from milk and run it through blender. Also, ghee is enjoying the resurgence of good fat.
