Cooking and Nature
Stacking up
half a score books
to check out
from local library
on new subjects
Seeing a red tailed hawk
through binoculars
knowing exactly why
it is so called
When I believe I could wake up
early in the morning two days straight
hearing kathe rattle names of birds
from their songs
making cakes that fluff
patting myself on fluke
switching gears in time to
follow cake mix directions
instead of passed on recipe
that doesnt work quite well.
calling friends for lunch with
a menu of recipes tried
for the first time
watching same friends
orchestrate dinner
making bread
and smiling
not wondering
why yeast smells
like bread
tasting different breads
telero, mini birote and bolillo
finding fresh
plums,apricots and nectarines
unexpectedly
and ditching
apples and oranges for them
seeing a buwick's wren
sing upclose, catch a worm
expect it to be busy for a while
and see it continue singing
keeping the worm aside
hearing chip chip
and recognising
that its the same
sound from
backyard, mountain.
