Tomato

Did you ever grow tomatoes in your garden? Have you seen a tomato plant? Growing tomatoes is in my blood, my grandfather's actually. But I did pick them from the farm. There is a determinate taste to a tomato. But each tomato comes with its own surprise making it indeterminate. A tomato plant does not need to grow from the ground. It can grow as a hanging one too.

If you are a gardener, you might have looked up all the tomato varieties to know which varieties of tomato are garden friendly. Blossom end rot is a condition caused by the calcium imbalance in a plant. It can happen to not only tomatoes but also pepper and other plants. If you happen to have unripe tomatoes, take solace in knowing that tomatoes ripen even after being picked. I have seen a friend whose tomato planting not only called for the plant but a golden spoon treatment of a big planter, mulch, frost protection and shade. To grow tomatoes is to employ other essentials like staking, trellis or tomato cages. If you are gardening tomatoes, you might have already made pizza with fresh tomatoes or tomato pies
I never saw a tomato seedling. But Stanley Burnshaw, a poet wrote in Seedling Air poem

"I sing my seedling air
I shout this ancient air"

What is the seedling air, part ancient air and part future air? Is it what the heirloom tomatoes have? When I hear of big, juicy, mouth watering beefsteak tomatoes, (if these are too mouthful for you, how about cherry tomatoes?) I am reminded of the The last supper movie. You dont want to know what fertilizer is used for the tomatoes in the garden. Recently a friend was talking about her sister's garden and how their dog helps too and I started wondering if the dog helps in potting what with all the videos. Composting dog poop is an option.

Although tomato seeds seem like an intermission in the food, I was humbled after taking look at sequoia seeds.

The beauty of rot and harvest.

Is tomato a fruit or a vegetable? It is probably one of the first food conundrums. Why we need pests is a question that you are sure to get from kids.
