Winter Journal is better

Paul Aster is also author of  the book Winter Journal. So I was curious to see what could have been left out in that book. And what is this Interior.
If you are such curious, the first half is good. It could have easily been Small Memories of Jose Saramago since its in the style of an old self looking at self when it was forming.
And then I dont get why two lengthy movie synopsys have to be in this book. And then a note about finding a diary and what follows is excerpts from that diary.
The first and latter parts are a good contrast of how the author is able to write experiences from memory better than trying to make sense of a world stashed in words and letters to others.

The author maintains his unique style of writing of his experiences in third person. I have a different background than the writer, so I enjoyed reading about his childhood. Minute things like his stringing some w's to make wwww was amusing.

Wheels in Life

To buy or not- A molecular gastronomy kit

If you have read some chef memoirs, then you know that there is a lot of toil and no social life. This Chef's story in To the Bone too is no different. But the food, each picture stops you in your tracks and makes you ask what is it on the page. Setting the description of the food on a black back ground has its magic of wanting to know even more about the food.
The book is all about what he learnt at each position in the restaurants he staged at.
Having not gone to a culinary school, Liebrandt talks of the book White Heat as an influence. He gives credit to whatever he learnt from each of his mentors. In the end, he has managed to make his book too a keeper like that.
The food in the pictures seems abstract and may be you will never make it or eat it. But still because it is so foreign, it will inspire you to make something different from the usual that you do and not just in cooking.
Savoury Meringues. who would have thought out of the sugar box.
I dont understand half the ingredients but I'm keeping this book as inspiration for creative endeavours.

Jack Reacher

I didnt realise that this was from books

Arjun the warrior

I didnt know the story of Trigarthas and Susharman.  The Mahabharatha that we learnt of is all oral from the language teachers, who would go from story to story as and when the need arrived. Seeing it in a visual form made some things clear, about the way Pandavas, dressed being in forests. Dronacharya in this movie looks cunning but the Dronacharya that we saw in the movies and books earlier was grandfatherly adorable with shoulder long grey tresses.

I was thinking of freelancers like in the A Knight's Tale too.

Word play

How I discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson

Once upon a time. Upon a time? in Blue Footsies, Nelson lets the spontaneous wonder of words in focus, take her on a word marathon.

Underwhelming

Dog Days by Karen English

The book has lot going for it except for the story arc.
The characters are lovable and well developed with nuances. Even Carlotta the dog whom Gavin has to take for walks is interesting to read about. Dialogues are realistic. But the missing ingredient is that the story does not even make it to contrived.
A great aunt is a guest for few days. A dog is lost. There are the dive off points but those havent been fully used to take the story to its potential. The length of the book might have something to do with it.
The non fussy illustrations are unique.

Portrait of an artist as a funny man

Ham: Slices of a Life by Sam Harris

I have never heard of Sam Harris before. When the book reads as 'essays and stories about friendship, celebrity, growing up and getting sober'. Celebrity is too off-putting and the rest of the terms are too general. But they are 'Essays' and that made me open the book. One of the initial chapters about a marriage with whose name cannot be mentioned
was that hump of celebrity essay and beyond that I just appreciated the author as a child artist, an artist and a biographer.
In the path of celebrity, his essays had to include celebrities. In this book he tried on several hats. he seemed larger than life like Bill Murray with his cloak on Letterman. And then he is an everyday dad trying to find matching interests with his son.
The author has an internal world and a very funny one at that. Liver essay.
For some essays the stage setting of why that essay is well done. You reach an aha moment where you realise why the last few pages were used up as not an end in itself but as an opener for another bigger show like his career moments singing as a curtain raiser for the Queen of Soul.

Reduced to joy

I have never read Mark Nepo's work before.
In 'Transformation' which begins with 'It could be the letter never answered' or in the eponymous poem - 'We never know when we will blossom into what we're supposed to be. It might be early. It might be late ..', its like the Russian Roulette - Joy can hit you any time. The joy of being human. A person in any walk of life can relate to the poems. There's spirit, love, bliss - Top human needs.
Our planet, needs this book to Calm.

Birds going Northwest

Going home
were birds in a long line
very few in a V
the ones at the back
broke the line
sticking out in twos
like they had something
to say to the one behind them
like the backbenchers

Birds

On today's birdwatch I saw some Ring- necked Duck.
I was quick to point that I ave never seen them before. But my birdwatching book with a tick mark on th Ring Necked duck says otherwise.
The book also says that coots make 9 nests before moving into one. they must get their building permits very easily.

Saw some burrowing owls too. A housing project for the burrowing owls.
On a dry patch of land there were many killdeer.
They all started flying away and some issued calls. It was in reaction to appearance of a Northern Harrier.
In no time, a killdeer was back to tapping the ground to whip out bugs.
Next to the park was a field and I couldnt help wondering of the different birds in the field. I was told that they would be different from the natural habitat birds. I repeated that abert Towhee's can only be found in the Sonoran Desert, thats when I was told that Mojave DesertChihuahuan Desert were all different because of their different rainfalls and temperatures. And that Antarctica is a desert.
