World in photos

The potted plant fronds grow out of the railings, out of the building like the railing was built around it.

The clouds in reserve at Bari Vecchia, Italy.

Small alleys feel like living rooms with furniture, plants, and radios joining residents outside. This is probably the feeling you get with the potted plant above. The fascination of trying to be out in something bigger, be close to house and still part of something big like the outdoors.

Contrast this feeling with the narrator in Cathedral (short story) by Raymond Carver. When the blind man asks the narrator to open his eyes, which he had closed to draw a cathedral with a pen and eyes closed, being also followed by the blind man ---

"My eyes were still closed. I was in my house and I knew that. But I didn't feel inside anything.

"Its really something," I said.

"

This ending is treated as zero-ending.

While looking at Bari Vecchia photos, after a seeing a video of a lady making orechiette on the street shaping the shells with her knife, I looked for a short story with the theme of cathdral. Prior to that, I looked at the Church of St Michael, Toseland, Cambridgeshire and wanted to know how to described those windows that project far and above like and old telivision. Is that from the 12th century too like the front door. The short story has a late night telivision show where the commenter goes from cathedral to cathedral in different countries.

Back to Bari Vecchia..

The style of the buildings in the ancient village reflects the intertwining of the various eras that characterized the architecture and everyday life of this neighborhood. In a place, we want to be transported elsewhere, but it has to be maintained too. When streets are maintained by living people, frozen in time, its like the Ship of Theseus.

Whats the oldest thing you have seen, biggest thing you have viewed? This reminds me of some poem about how the sun and moon havent changed but the viewer has.

When you look at pictures of a place between different seasons, you notice even small things like a gull in the sky or a circle of trash cans making arrangements for tourists with tents all around the buildings. Even the circular benches.
