Ten Tears and One Embrace

The illustrations are whimsical. Looking at different kinds of tears makes the reader hyper aware of different situations when we have tears in our eyes. The book makes you cognizant of the differences in the different situations you cry.
Its like Eskimos having more than 20 words for snow because each is different.
The font of the text too is artistic. The color palette of pastels went very well with the theme.
The lens of kids finding this out in the laboratory encourages kids to list out all things related to a theme that they are interested in.
The language and thought is very poetic. tears being shiny that they can be put to many uses, keeping the bottle of tears open so they can join the clouds are all simple yet profound.

Beyond the Label: Women, Leadership, and Success on Our Own Terms

When I picked this book, I didnt know much about Chanel, but I was curious about how one gets to be a CEO of Chanel. Maureen Chiquet's 'Beyond the label' echoes each time she made a bold move for the better.
I like how Chiquet shared lessons learned at each place - L'Oreal, Gap, Old Navy and finally Chanel and the things she pioneered there - Palazzo pants. The author shows how no job is too small to learn lessons and understand the business. Against convention, a career advice goes not to harp on titles but what the role entails. This chimes with the author's upending the label and its expectations ethos. She also stresses on the importance of listening skills in becoming a better leader.
I found it interesting that passionate salespeople on the floor can know a lot about the fabrics they sell.
A great read for those who love arts and design and the impact it can have.

Having finished MBA, after reading this book, it comes full circle with Leadership through hard conversations.

L'Oreal Paris Skin Care Pure Clay Clear & Comfort Mask

After reading that Maureen Chiquet, ex-CEO of Chanel, worked at L'Oreal, I was curious about trying a L'Oreal product.
L'Oreal Paris Skin Care Pure Clay Clear & Comfort Mask with its pale blue color packaged along with green lid, soothes both your mind and skin from the get go. As soon as you open the lid, its instant meditation/spa aura around because of the fragrance.
After applying the mask, I was reading 'Lilly and Fin, A Mermaid's tale' by Cornella Funke which put me in water in the imagination. From there, it was easy to close my eyes and imagine the seaweeds from which the mask was made. It is comforting to slow down like that.
The mask after drying is not uncomfortable tightening like Multani Mitti/ Fuller's Earth.
After washing the face, I did feel like touching my skin more to see the finger glide. The Titanium oxide does leave your skin brighter.
I found the mask application and waiting for it to dry process to be therapeutic. The mask works in a holistic way. The recommended frequency of application is twice a week. Which means its good to bring down the mid week stress.
I feel that the before and after shows the skin is cleaner and even with the mask's magic.
Happy Relaxing.

Balloon Kite

We were nowhere
close to water
Yet soothing tides
bathed our feet

in no time winds
turned the
playdough in my hand
to a balloon that
started flying in the air
and I began
pulling at the string
like a kite

Palmistry

The playdough
a hand
I asked the hosts
how was it made
to have all the
tiny strokes of a
real hand
they said it was
a mold

Reach by Andy Molinsky

"Warren Buffet lamented that in college he limited himself by only signing up for classes where he wouldnt have to put himself out on a limb and speak in public. And whenever he did have to speak in public, especially in the early days, the results werent pretty: "I would throw up," Buffett remarked. "In fact, I aranged my life so that I never had to get up in front of anybody." - Andy Molinsky.

Getting down to the stove level

Its now a known thing that our front left burner burns the food compared to the right burner. How I found this is, a recipe gave different results on these burners. Yesterday, I sat down against the island, facing the stove. And there they are 'Power Burner' and 'Accusimmer'. Turn out that the extra burning is a feature.

Counting by Knuckles

On reading ' I have no trouble remembering

I recall a method my dad taught me
about assigning months to the

of the knuckles and the  space
in between
to know their lengths

The Harvard Business Review Manager's Handbook: The 17 Skills Leaders Need to Stand Out

You might have been stuck in the dichotomy of wants of your manager and employees. According to The Harvard Business Review Managers Guidebook
"your supervisor may emphasize planning and resource management, supporting corporate goals, managing risk, and accepting final accountability for your unit. Your employees likely have  a different view: they look to you to organize and direct the group's strategic goals, support them as they accomplish tasks, solve problems, and answer questions decisively, and facilitate their long- term growth"

What you want to be known for?

"You reach a point in your life when you start recognizing that your time is limited. And you realize that what matters is more than just your own achievements. Its the legacy. And the legacy in itself is the achievement and what you want to be known for."- Kathy Mazzarella, Graybar

You could reach this point when you lose a loved one.

Four Flat Fish

Revolving 'self-portrait' by Nadar

Photographs of the famous by Felix Nadar

Trying to draw
She pressed her ear against the shell
I started with the shell being held in right hand
pressing against the right ear
The head above was big and male
After extending the hand the
neck had to be elongated

the hand could be from the
side of the body turned
the face didnt have to face us

I reversed the front of the face
to the twisted back
Now shes reclaimed

Drum City

I was reading 'Drum City' by Thea Guidone along with my preschooler and feeding the rice cereal to my infant. And I think I have hit upon a great ritual. It couldnt have started with a better book. All that rhyming. I like how every page on the book starts with DRUM which is like a big caesura but the rest on the lines that follow flow like waves. There's mystery too..
" people in banks,
people in shops,
everywhere, everything, everyone
STOPS"

and I wondered why...
On the next spread is the huge army of kids with their tubs and tins..
The illustrations are well done too. Catchy enough for preschoolers to call out what they see.

Second time around, I started singing it..

Junior Mint Single-Cup Hot Cocoa for Keurig K-Cup Brewers

I had this Junior Mint Single-Cup Hot Cocoa for Keurig K-Cup Brewers and found it to be appealing. when you say mint and chocolate, I think of the after eight chocolate squares which have gooey mint inside them. But this cocoa is nothing like that, neither too sweet, nor too minty. The consistency of the cocoa too is smooth, not like the ones you mix hot water with.

Museum of Mistakes

Museum of Mistakes

A dish falling down hour before the arrival of guests

In the above page, author EricWeiner talks about how mess ups show the process of an art. Can we extend that argument to how decay of a body shows how the body works, which will help us in decoding how to make the human body or stop it from aging. If we were perfect, then we wouldnt be able to reproduce ourself. But if we are not perfect, then the dissimilarity makes us irreproducible in total likeliness.

Straight as a Crooked Stick

Tomb of the Diver
Would I be shockd to find that the Parthenon colums are not straight? That some how the ancients were not perfect and that their striaght line was crooked? Entasis was a way of getting the columns to look straight. But why is straight aesthetic?

My thoughts on

La Limpieza

This poem takes you from the Limpieza de sangre to an instructable of How to turn your bleach stained red bathtub white. Or thats just this reader's journey. With a word like Limpieza, the reader will be forced to lookup the meaning, kind of like running around for a beg, borrow, steal and now you have spent some time for the poem. With that hook and images like dove-bone-dirt (When I first heard of bone dry is how I feel of dove-bone-dirt) and russet (red potatoes came to mind). With this tete-a-tete, the poem has lodged in my mind and awaits a knock at a further date. Thoughts during an ambulance blare are universal where they flow like cries between birds when they hear an eagle. JGApoet shows this poem as a filigree of her time-warping abilities.
