Walk rate

Do you go to a store and find that it is out of what you need or doesnt have a substitute either then you walk out, you have become a walk rate statistic if someone is counting. If a customer leaves a store without buying anything, but no one clicks them out, did the marketing work? Are there people who count custoemrs who go empty handed when they exit the store. It might get tricky at warehouses, when the cart bearer goes ahead and the family is delayed and seem like they have gone emptyhanded.

Analogy and Metaphor

I was reminded of Carmine Gallo's video where he said Analogy and Metaphor are useful in successful communication. While working with intel and explaining dual core, it was best explained as two brains. When I came across reference to Starbuck's coffe machine using cloud for upgrades as an analogy for understanding NXP's recent acquisition of a small Marvell unit, I understood what Gallo meant.

In Warren Buffett and the power of analogy to sell your ideas, Gallo refers to John Pollack's Shortcut how analogies reveal connections, spark innovation and sell.

Arthur's Family Treasury by Marc Brown

Arthur is really smart in how he solved the Birthday schedule clash so that the whole class could enjoy. I asked the little reader whose birthday party she would go to. She said both. One after another.

Arthur's family vacation rules were clearly understood by the little reader. She knew why Buster didnt make the cut. The Lobster Shack is funny. They make their food so good that they eat it themselves. The story went into a good detail of a disastrous vacation taking a good turn with some much needed field trip planning from Arthur. Turned out so great that DW wanted to plan her own field trip. Have you ever had so much fun in an activity that you thought it would be fun to organize your own.

Kate had grown up tap dancing and

What if you could rewrite mundane writing with some specifics like these, making it humorous as it is unexpected.

Humor

The other day my colleague while giving a speech spoke about facing and beating the traffic on Amazon while holiday shopping.

Arshad almost drops a vase, and the owner of the gallery gasps, says “that’s 300 years old!” Arshad responds, “Oh? The way you screamed, I thought it was a new one.”

I could do that

Do you like to pick up projects that get you somewhere or projects where you take on the challenge of doing something for say 30 days either because it is tough or you are curious of the results. While Murphy workout for 30 days is the latter kind of challenge, even to get to a fitness of the doing it for a day is a good challenge. Even a quarter murph.
Murph who what why

Analytics

White and Red Circles

My co-leader asked me for a small bowl to cutout a circle and she asked the girls to make 6 circles on a white sheet and 6 on red. We knew we were going to make candy cane. It still didnt strike me how we were going to do that. Once I saw the overlapping circles, especially with glitter gems added to each, I think it is a very creative candy cane.

Exercise from Memory

Do you have a workout that you could follow if you dont have any access to TV, internet? Recently when talking to a friend I told her about popsugar workout videos. She then said that she as a 30 min routine that she could follow.
I think the value in watching a workout video, other than timing the exercises is the mirror neurons that get triggered when you see someone else working out.
Recently I have been bitten by the pull up bug.
I had an hour to spend. Usually I take a book along with me. But I hadnt done my exercise for the day yet. In a previous instance, I worked out to Christa Dipaolo workout in the courtyard of the community center. Today, my phone wasnt charged enough.
I took a walk to the play area. The circular arm walk is too high. I rose to the pedestal and hanged onto the hand hold just for a second and back to the safe ground. I have noticed that once you get comfortable in a position, you increase the count time.
Then I started with the legs raised high from the 360 Sculpt Day Front Core (It takes a while to know about the core and then to know that there is Front Core, Back Core and Side Core)

Then moved onto the staple, plank, pushups, fast bicycles, bridge, squats, Banana, Superman (holding the contraction as long as possible), Russian Twist. Soon my heart rate went to 180. I did quick in lace runs and sprints. It turned out to be a fun session. I felt proud of doing a self-directed workout. I felt warm at the end of it, even though it was cold outside.
If you look at enough exercises, you will have enough in your memory to recall.

We saw this book todayat Costco. Uncover a Shark: An Uncover It Book (Uncover Books). Kids were very taken with the structure of the book. Each page that you move takes away some parts from the shark. While moving the books up and down, I found a Dog book too.

6 Things I learned from the Holiday Bazaar

I have never been to a Girl Scout Holiday Bazaar. I kept thinking of what handmade things we could we put on sale that would be under 2$. We made a trip to Joann's and bought a pipecleaner kit to make pipecleaner reindeers. It didnt take us long to realise that was hard and switched to something simpler that I already know how to make. (The advice to writers of writing what they know.)

1. The first sale is life changing

When a little girl bought a tiny woollen hat, I was on cloud nine. It was a bychance thing. I started making what I learned as a small flower with strands of a ribbon wire. When I did that with a yarn, it turned out to be nothing but knitting without a needle. As I kept at it, I realised that you could use any circular things (stamps lid) as memento, surround it with 3-4 rounds of yarn and then loop all around ,to make an ornament. Then I recalled the tiny woollen hat could be made with the very yarn that I was holding. I asked if we had a toilet roll. That is the base needed. My little one was quick to point out that we had one. We set off making the cute tiny woollen hats. only when you get into the details, do you realise that every little decision matters. Should the loop be made upside or downside. When in doubt, maintain consistency. When we didnt carry the toilet roll for the event, we improvised with glue and card stock cut into the size, we wanted and made into a tiny band. There is a step where you need to pull in all the strands of yarn, which I skipped in favor of making an instant version of it. The same customer, on her next round bought this hat made onsitu.

2. You lost him

A kid wanted a gingerbread house. Earlier my daughter did say that we could make a gingerbread house with the popsicle sticks. That would need lot if sticks, so we didnt make a gingerbread house. There were so many other crafts that could be done by decorating each stick as a snowman or Santa character. When I was reminded of that, I started scrambling for sticks and by then his mom said loudly 'you lost him'. Your customers are running like honeybees to where the product is. If you are not a hive, then they know that you dont have honey.

3. Learn from your employees as customers

My little ones on a break, went around and got cookies they decorated, brownies and cupcakes. Pendant necklaces which they usually dont get to buy but today they had tickets worth 5$ each that they could use to buy to their heart's content.

4. Learn from yourself as a customer

As the event drew to a close, I was on a mission to find a bow for a little friend who gave me a Christmas gift. I scanned all the stalls quickly for a bow. Like mst customers, who already know what they want and will only stop if what you have looks like what they want. When I saw these popsicle stick bracelets, I asked what it was made from. Mod podge effect of applying paper to wood is so cool. It was probably that novelty affirmed by my curiosity that made the sale.

5. What your customers want

Some kids walked around with snuggly blankets. My dad to bought one such as a memento not for any grandchild, so he could share the story of the event. As I took a stroll around, I realised there were the tiny woollen hats else where to. I wanted to find out how much they were selling it for. I wanted to know why the girl who bought it from our table, didnt buy it from there, where there was much more variety. We had some tiny decor green and white christmas trees which some kids found very cute. When I didnt know how to price them as they were supposed to be landscape decorations for a triangle banner, one lady suggetsed the price herself. Some kids were window shopping as they were out of tickets and let me know so too. Towards the end when two kids ooh-aahed at the tiny trees. I let them have it.

6. Look around - Make and Take vs Made

The kind lady who let us in even after the registration period was over, told us that the little kids are very excited about shopping that they are not very much into making something there.

All in all, it was a fun event and fun family time too. I didnt realise how quickly the time went, especially as I was making the tiny hat right there. Later when we had a photo op with family, I was told that the lady next to our stall, gave my girl a bracelet.

Santa's Reindeers

My daughter surprised me with knowing blitzen as a word. She then let me in on the secret of all the other Santa reindeers - Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder. This was a word search at their holiday party. Some kid drew the outline of the words and it looked like a snowman.

But the best liked snowman was shaped like a marshmallow. Marshmallow is only 95 years old. Some made it look like a tinman from the Wizard of Oz. They couldnt wait to eat it as soon as their creation was made. Just like all the old lady, old man, pig, cow and fox who all wanted to eat the gingerbread man.

The kids also made these fun Gingerbread man decorations.

While waiting for our class volunteers, I peeped into the other class where parents had already set the room flush with red table cloths. I wondered if I was at the right place. In a while when the main parent arrived, we were set in 5 min. I was amazed at how quickly the arrangements got done. I wondered if I could ever setup a party like this. All the party accoutrements were ordered already. All the parents arrived with those on time. In a jiffy, we were done.

Do you come across people who organise things well and make you aspire to do so?

Monkey bars

The other day at a community park, a man challenged few kids to arm walk from one end of the semi circular monkey bar to the other. I wanted to go, but my husband said that it will hurt your shoulders. It looks easy but I know what he's saying. The kids are light and make it seem easy.

Today when I went to another park I saw a small driving wheel hanging at the top. I saw kids get rom their half pedestal on to it, twist it round about half way, hang and then drop. I wondered if I could take a fall at my age. I wondered if I could jump and reach it. I went close to size it up. WTH. I jumped up and reached for it. Hung onto it for 5 counts. The second time, my palms hurt. I rubbed them to ease the pain. The thrid time, I was there for 10 counts. I was counting fast. I think i have found my favorite spot.

I felt great and strong after that.

5 Tips for non-profits

If you had some paint and could only paint few of the blocks, would you start from left or right?

In Generation Impact, How Next Gen Donors are Revolutionizing Giving, Sharna Goldseker and Michael Moody interestingly note that donors care about not the sheer number of people who would be helped but the percent of the total need in help. To put it in perspective, the example provided is that donors are more likely to help 90 percent of 100 people in a single village destroyed by an earthquake than they are to help 10 percent of 10000 people.

Here are five things you can learn from their Top Five Most Important Components of Philanthropy Strategy.

1. Have the material about your organization, readily available for research by donors. Are you using the storytelling practice with And but therefore in your statements?

2. Frame your work and solutions as a fit for your ideal donor and their goals. Know your donor or show your donor, so prospective donors can identify with the profile of the past donors.

3. Rootcause and Systemic solution Vs Symptom treatments

4. Show how you are most effective in your mission. Who pays your operating costs?

5. Make your funders your best customers by becoming word-of-mouth recommended cause. In 2011 report , about 32% of donors were either casual givers donating to well known organizations or donated based on personal ties of knowing the organization staff.

shrimp

I have never cooked shrimp before but today made it from the Kirkland ones. Turned out good. Its all new boiling it and then cooking it. Even tried the pan fried version.

Crafts

Popsicle stick bracelets
Made these Yarn hats
As a kid, we made some crafts with slivers of ropes. When I tried that out with yarn, it was nothing but knitting without needles.
Whne I realised that I didnt pack toilet roll for the base of yarn hat, made  the base with card stock and glue.
You can knit around pipecleaner and make necklaces, heart, angel ornamaents.

A thing about circle is that it has infinite powers. While makign a round ornament, I didnt have to worry about centering. Wherever you end up, finishing the circle is the center to hang it from.

Dhokla, Insanity and P90x

Few days ago I had lots of Dhokla and was a bit worried about it. Usually I treat Dhokla as a dry thing but it has two traps. One is the liquid seasoning and the other is the tete-a-tete between savory and sugar. God help you overcome that. After having one too many, I had to have hummus to break off that and rinse the palate. This is where mouthwash with even water would help probably.
Last week, too much rice moved the scale to the east. But nothing that Insanity or P90x cant cure.
Today, I did the Shaun T - Max 30 Challenge Day 1 . If you want to do it, you can proceed from 5-37 min of the video. It is great exercise. The sound and the video are not friendly, but one thing that you dont have to do is time the exercise. Go enjoy the exercise.

A colleague while waiitjng for an application to run, showed us his rock collection. Gemstone spheres. Animal carvings - monolithic as well as die cast. Malachite is the most expensive. Saw a soapstone carving of different orbs inside. A dalmatian made with spotted rock. A fish fossil. Natural landscapes.

More flexible

P90X Xstretch

Be careful when you tell your friends, anything is fine. I went along with this choice. Ideally I would liked more rapid movement after two days of no exercise. This was a 1 hour session. The watch kept thinking that I had paused my workout. Somewhere along the 45 min mark, I realised hat I had become more flexible. My head touched my knee on one side. Sometimes to know th eprogress, you need patience.
