Haber Bosch method of converting hydrogen and nitrogen into ammonia
When I hear of an innovation, I wonder about the circumstances that led to it. Its harder to find personal lay man kind of motivation for these industrial type of discoveries. Profit and capitalism are good incentives for larger scale utility like fertilizers and electricity.
In this case due to the demand, tabletop method had to be scaled to industrial. When put as Enriching the earth: Fritz Haber, Carl Bosch, and the Transformation of World Food Production, I can see how the social aspect of it can motivate the scientists. Considering that nitrogen is needed for human growth, it makes sense that scientists would be concerned about our humanity continuity.

Ammonia NH3 -> Haber-Bosch process -> N gained from air; H3 from methane (CH4).
Yes, natural gas is a hydrocarbon! Why do we need Ammonia? To grow food to feed 7.9bn people!
No, wind & solar cannot produce Ammonia. Doubts? Back to chemistry class pls. pic.twitter.com/r3pDFftOvj
