Heart Expressions
The cracked heart

matching
zig- zag edges
to make it realistic

But what is realistic
is there are some pieces
that fall down
wanted neither by
the zig
nor the zag side

is that some metal powder
should fall for the knife
to be sharp

The Nest

Left wing
with cascading
layers
of feather tract

many down feathers
on the path
disheveled

tiny morsels of red
and
feathers
proof of a bird

So is the
chatter when you
roll your window
down at a corner
with fountains and
blooming lantana

Or the visits
to the bower plant

The Chasen

Twice, we were driving on the wrong side of the road.
Being chased by a wily smiled guy.
There were two kids a boy and a girl, suddenly they were ours. we told them to run.
They opened a door. It was palatial inside. At every level of the building at the staircase landing was a person being taken care of. We were safe underground.
Assimilated in the new culture.
We went out to a fair. After an event, when the porch of a store cleared, there they were the wily guy in a wheelchair this time and his aide. As soon as I recognized him, we pushed a bundle of sticks, which fell on them in a rectangle pattern. With each push of sticks, their grave grew stronger.
The aide creeped away. The vision got foggy. I was screaming that the other one is getting away. You were gone too.

No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness

Just like how changing a diet can have different results, if an exercise is not working out for you, switching to another activity that you like might bring the results you are hoping for.

Kettle Motivational Fitness Sports Bottle

Recently I read a book, Own the Day, Own your Life by Aubrey Marcus and changed my ways of drinking water. I find that the bottle with the oz markers is very helpful. I fill it to 16 oz per meal and try to finish it by the next. Even though the bottle has 20 oz marker, I go for the baby steps, its like customising the sand hour-glass for the time increments that are realistic.

This bottle below has helpful time markers too, to show you when to drink the water by. You are aware of the time in many ways, as you are always looking at it, on your phone, on your laptop. How about using that for your benefit or increasing your water intake? It likes a scheduled appointment, ensuring that it gets done.

I have now increased my water content by 1% after reading this book.

What are your techniques for ensuring that your water intake is good?

Wading through life

There Are No Grown-ups A Mid-Life Coming of Age  by Pamela Druckerman

The book is summarised in chapters as -

You know you have a fortysomething body when..

"You have gained and lost the same ten pounds so many times you feel a certain affection for them".

"You have Googled everyone who was ever of any importance in your life. You sometimes forget this and Google them again". For me it happens to be artists.

We want our authors to wade along with us even in age. We want our poets too, to make sense of what lies beyond the hill of the peak age.

Bridge in time

There were few villages located close by. They all had to help each other out. One day village A asked village B for help. The mayor decided to help out but first needed to figure out if he could support it. He found out that such a bridge had been built before in his village. He contacted the artisan and asked if she was interested in helping out. This bridge was going to be a part of bigger bridge, so all the materials had to be same as the bridge units from various villages.
This artisan went to another community and found out what the bridge was being made with. The state building codes required a new material to be used. Since the company making a connector material was down, the community had been using some makeshift material. The mayor asked the artisan to find out from the other contractor if they could move to the new material. The contractor replied that they now have funds to get the material from another place.
The artisan took on the job, everyone moved to the latest material and the brdige got done in time.

Will only one leader do?

If an organisation has to be in synchrony, the values should be modeled not just by CEO but all the leaders down to the last employee.

Wouldnt burning oars do?

When I was little, I had to incorporate an idiom into a sentence.

"eru daati theppa thagalbettinattu"

to burn an oar after crossing the river

I used it in an example as tearing your bus ticket after a trip. I did understand that it didnt totally get to the idiom's saying of makign something useless to self/others after having benefited from it. By tearing a useless ticket, you dont capture the essence of this idiom.

From the motivational point of burning boats, wouldnt just burning oars do? Or you would find poles from the forest and quickly make make-shift oars? or may be your enemies would do that?

Fitness Now

Just learned about Soi Ta-iad fitness village in Phuket, Thailand.
About my own fitness story. I started P90x on alternate weekends about 4 months ago. Reached my first goal of second pre-pregnancy weight.
BMI next.

I started exercising on weekends too, my Achilles heel. Thanks popsugar. That is where I first heard of Muy Thai too.

In P90x3, when I had to do plow which is halasana, I felt nostalgic about the times that I could do it. Did some research and found that, I should learn sarvangasana first.

Fr the last 3 days, have been using the wall for sarvangasana, all that inverted blood feels so good, after a workout in a warm body.

10 minutes of Cardio Abs and then its sweat time. After this pure cardio. I was shooting for 20 mins of it, but the flow of the video is good, I did a few minutes extra. Its almost like a quick dance.

Looks like

Saying good morning to everything, with my kid, to make her ride to summer camp interesting, I told her about the heart shaped cactus. Its not thay I havent seen such photos before. Once I saw a heart shaped prickly pear cactus and had this why dont I ever see such things.
Today I picked up a stethoscope coiled into a heart decal on the back of a car.
How long do you think it takes to go on a road and pick out a new establishment that is being built. I took about 5 rides to realise a new icecream shop.

greater than

With kids, baby and not a baby is an eternal debate. in one such number 5 got started and my kids started saying 5 is bigger.
I said "than"
5 is bigger than?
I heard "7 is bigger"
I said "than" again
7 is bigger than?
And then there wa a countdown of numbers.

Later on the computer, my kid wanted to know what the < and > buttons were for.
It was easy to recall the earlier conversation and give examples of 5<6 8="" and="">7.

Not all quandaries have such fast closure, do they?

If you snore

Little one complained that she wont be able to fall asleep, if I snore. I told her, I have the same issue and that I wake up the person snoring, which is enough time to fall back into sleep.
Lets give it a try. I will pretend to snore, you can wake me and then you can fall asleep. She took turns. Wow.

The Essence of Idli

This morning my daughter wanted idli. decades ago, if a child asked for this, it would have to wait another day for the wish to be fulfilled or if the mother stored the batter in the fridge, then it could be catered to right away. If there is a store selling batter, thats a good situation too.
We looked up recipes and gave this one a try. In the first batch I forgot to add baking soda and no surprise, it didnt fluff. In the second round, the idlis did turn out fluffy. My father was surprised how we were going to have idlis without previous day's preparation. My husband looking at the idlis being cooked in the pressure cooker without the whistle on, wondered if I forgot to put it on. I told him that this is how it is done. I remember from my mom's cooking that you have to wait for 10 min. My daughter started looking at the timer and told me when it was time. For a good measure, I wanted then to wait for another 2 min. Then they questioned my 10 min timing.

In the end we had soft idlis. Everyone was very happy. I understood the essence of idli is not the flour with which it is made but the fluffiness and its softness, like the bread smells like yeast.
Later, I asked my daughter about the recipe and now idli as she knows it has suji and yogurt in it. Wonder if my mom would balk at this or if her ancestors made it some other way.

The Lost Rainbow

I lost a rainbow
not mine to ever
begin with

but

I saw a rainbow
in the parking lot

I wanted to show
it to my kids
after reaching home

With houses around
I couldnt find it

My little one said
"Take a picture of it"

Every time I see
a rainbow on the dark black road
in the parking lot
from the scattering of light
on the car headlights

or a roadrunner
or a blue opening in the cloudy sky

I show a picture, so I dont
lose the rainbow

Look at the beautiful sunset

Every once in a while
I interest my daughter
in the beautiful desert sky

On an upset day
when I heard
"look at the beautiful sunset"
from my daughter

my worries were
erased with
all the sunsets
I ever showed her

Ab ke Sawan

While doing exercise, I came across this song ab ke sawan, which made me decades lighter. I wanted to dance right away. In the evening after dinner, I was wondering how does one choreograph a song. I know neither music nor dance but enjoy them both.
Then I wonder if just jumping in the muddy puddle would cut it. I started with a few of those and found a beat to dance to. I do want to create something that is different about the season that always comes.

what hides it?

Is it you?

Getting the Estimate right?

NoEstimates: How To Measure Project Progress Without Estimating

Can we ever get the estimate right?

Sometimes we think something needs 3 weeks but the powers be want it in 2 weeks. Estimation is said to be best done when you get it from the person who is going to do the actual grinding. But what about the person who says 2 to 3 weeks but turns out that it can be done in 2 to 3 days. Or what about the person who thinks that a change can be done in an hour but with verification and presentation and final acceptance of the change, it runs into 3 weeks.

The corect answer lies somewhere in between the under estimation and the over estimation.

Or how about estimating after getting the feet wet?

Monitoring & Controlling Upma

Vermicelli Noodles

For some time now, noodles have been giving me grief. It ends up being mush. I used to know how to do it right. After long soul-searching I realised that the correct ratio of noodles to water is 1: 1.5 and not 1:2.
This week I was going to make 4:6, then I realised I will make 5:10 (This is where I put my 'leg into lentils', an idiom of doing a mistake. It should have been 5:7.5).
To my horror, when I realised that it was flooded, I added two handfuls of vermicelli noodles, still some containment needed to be done.

I was hellbent on getting it right. I went to the drastic measure of draining out extra water, retaining the desired consistency of dry upma.
Planning could have avoided this problem but even in planning, you can see how errors can creep in. Mis-en-place would have worked out too but whats a day in the kitchen if not an adventure.
All's well that ends well.

Project Management lesson from exercise

Wide Mat

While doing P90x a friend took this wide exercise mat. All was well, until the trainer asked us to spread our legs as wide as the mat. I erupted into laughter.

Vi Petal

While reading about vi petal activities, got the idea of doing cutout dolls for being a sister to every girl scout.
One girl asked for heart cutouts and later on made it into a crown. How creative!!
One girl was drawing somehtign with a crayon, which I later found had some patterns, we then realised that it was from the glittered circles on teh other sides which were makign an impression on this side, which is sort of reversing the impression onto this page.

Your fitness is 100% mental your body won't go where your mind doesn't

Your fitness is 100% mental your body won't go where your mind doesn't push it

Training does not happen only when you are at the gym or exercising. It is a state of mind.

“Patience applies everywhere: in training, in racing, and even when you are relaxing.

You have to be patient to train hard, in order to maintain your focus when you are running, and to maintain your thinking when you are outside training.” - Eliud kipchoge

You need both the pushing and the patience.

Things Money Cant buy

America's pastime

I was passing time reading Late bloomers-power of patience, Waiting for my child while she was practising Karate which will teach her discipline among many other good skills. There was a chattering going among 5 boys or so. There was a call from Mom, if the kids were ok.

When they were leaving, I realised they had these baseball bats with them. They went into the courtyard and one started swinging, two other were with their mitts, mostly catching the balls. After a while a man in his 50s walking by into the Karate room indulged the kids with a throw, All kids hovered in his direction, sometimes catching sometimes missing. This showed how a cross-generational interaction is required for kids to enjoy their favorite sport with others who feel the same way. He threw about 3 shots and waved bye to them. He wanted to end it strong. It was nice to see this little dance of how a game can connect such wide age disparity and strangeness.

How to remember any day?

Recently when I ran into a friend, I realised that the last time I met him at our house along with many other friends was on National Cheesecake Day and that will have a number associated with it. 30 July.
That I will never forget now as it is easier to remember a cheesecake day which was elebrated with about 9 different kind of cheesecake from Whole foods.
There is something to story making it more memorable than just some numbers that dont mean much.

This picture of Traveling together is so well composed.
