Hold onto the fishing people

Connecting the Dots: Lessons for Leadership in a Startup World by John Chambers, Chairman Emeritus, Cisco.

Dad's lesson to John Chambers, "Hold onto the fishing pole"

The other day, my dad was telling a story of our relative who drowned in a big well next to the ancestral house. He told me how people who are afraid unwillingly put the person who went to save them in danger as they hold onto them with all their might and pull them down. Sounds like the might of the fear can be used as a strength. He then offered that in such a situation, a stick should be held out, so the person drowning can hold onto it and be saved. Not being a swimmer, I dont know all this.
