Slim Down: A Grad 511 Course
Active Buddy
I briefly took up swimming because of an athlete friend. I went to the gym with other friends who also helped me with getting ab exercises right. If it is hard to find like minded people with similar schedules, now you can use Fitbit or your smartphone, to track your activity.
Active Wear
Have a pair of good shoes and active wear handy. Anything that makes you move is worth the investment. Same goes with your means of music which will motivate you to run or walk. It was an mp3 player for me. I know that’s old.
Crowdsearch
I was obese since my high school. My dad taught me yoga at that time. My mom observed that I loved walking. During college, I came across two very important pieces of information that changed my life. First that walking is a good way to lose weight and Second that it is easy to control your appetite. Armed with this, I struggled with changing my diet from rice to tortillas. Now that I could count what I was eating, it worked wonders in terms of appetite control. Around this time, another friend told me about the science behind slowing down a bit for the brain to get the satiety signals. Once you have a goal, it is amazing to see how al your friends chip in.
Audit the Gym
For one whole year, I exercised at the Student Recreation Center for almost an hour each day. It didn’t start out that way. I had never worked out on an elliptical before. I got to a comfortable 30 min piddle-paddle with the elliptical. One day, I found the machine had been worked to 60 min by a student before me. That’s it. I knew I could do it too. Every few days, a pound was melting off me. That only fueled me more to continue and stick with my exercise.
Be a Cinderella
No matter how much fun the homework was, I had to finish before the gong hit 12. I need a good sleep, so I made it a rule to finish all my homework before midnight. That way I wouldn’t have to deal with headaches from reduced sleep. A good night’s sleep will keep you productive the next day.
Bike, walk but don’t Flash
Most huge campuses are well suited for walk or bike. Your activity needs are met right there. If you are not in a hurry, don’t take the Flash (ASU’s Shuttle). I walked to the grocery store and back. Once I even jogged with a bouquet in my hand as the Olympic torch.
Climb the A Mountain
This is a good time to find out the names of the mountains around and start climbing them. That steep slope is going to be good for your cardio. A fresh
Skip the Free Pizza and the credit card
I was working hard at the gym every day. I was so tuned to that slog that even the tunes of free pizza didn’t shake me off my diet. Exercising with all its endorphin benefits will also regulate your meal choices. I cooked my own food which ensured that it was healthy. After a project, with friends, I would pig-out at the Papa Johns.
For me, losing weight at grad school turned out to be a dream come true. As the workout regimen was showing results, I made time for it every day. Straight from the class, I would go to gym. Making time for a healthy life, was my way of managing time as well as sending a signal to myself that I had it all under control.
My expectation from grad school, was that I would have lots of time for extra curricular activities. But with projects and Cinderella Curfew, it was a world unto its own. But out of that Chrysalis, emerged a Fit me. As a kid, I wondered why I was obese and wondered if there was a snake inside me. After walking the pounds out, one day while carrying a 3-pound watermelon, I realized half way through my weight loss journey, that I used to carry about 3 such watermelons all over my body. I lost about 20 pounds in few months but continued the healthy trend and pushed it to long walks and a rim-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon. I got so addicted to exercise that when the gym was closed during spring break, I walked 10 miles home from office.
Reducing Occupational Hazards of a Nurse
When I first read of nurses suffering from back
injuries, it was quite a shock that a hospital could have occupational hazards.
NPR’s Injured Nurses [1] made me
aware of this issue that what is a treatment haven for suffering patients is
dangerous for the nurses who serve there.
“There’s no
safe way to do it with body mechanics”. McKinney
stressed that the safest way to move patients is to use equipment, such as
motorized lifts that hang from the ceilings [2].
On Jan. 1, 2012, the
state of California put into effect the Hospital
Patient and Health Care Worker Injury Protection Act. The
bill requires the replacement of manual lifting and transfer of patients with
the appropriate use of powered lift and transfer devices.
According to Handbook
of Modern Hospital Safety by William Charney, safety committees and
employee training can be effective in prevent hazardous exposures and reducing
the incidences of occupational injuries, disabilities and diseases associated
with employment in health care.
According to The Leapfrog
Hospital Safety Grade website, it is a public service provided by The
Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety,
and transparency in the U.S. health system. Leapfrog should also rate a
hospital according to the workplace safety too. Workplace safety incidents are
required to be well recorded. This information should be easy to track. National Health Care Ratings Summit is
a good way to make the public aware
of their role in engaging with the ratings and weeding out hospitals that do
not make hospital safety a priority.
The hospital upper management too should track the
reduction of workplace injuries as a KPI (Key Process Indicator). With this
message, there will be a buy-in from everyone to make safety at work, a
priority. VA hospitals have reduced workplace injuries by 40% using technology
[3]
Patient- centered design principles like UT Southwestern's Clements University Hospital
in Dallas with double-paned glass in lieu of curtains to reduce infection risk
[4]. Anti-Microbial
screens too can reduce the risk of infections.
Manufacturing and Construction industry can be looked
at to see how they reduced the workplace injuries.
Facts About Hospital Worker Safety [5] shows why it
matters to create a culture of safety. There is a detailed analysis of the
hidden costs of health worker injuries. ‘good catch’ is a nice incentive to
foster safety culture.
OSHA has launched a program to protect nursing
employees [6]. With a detailed look in the hospital surrounding and information
gathered through the health worker interviews, OSHA should be able to come up
with recommendations to reduce workplace injuries. If OSHA succeeds in getting
the workplace injuries online, crowdsourcing can be used for data analysis to
come up with insights that can be used to solve the problem. For example,
Notevault’s Crowdsource Safety is an effective tool in assuring safety
compliance in the construction industry [7].
Just like Patient Safety Managers, there should be
dedicated Health Worker safety managers.
With
automation as much as possible, workplace safety awareness, healthcare worker
injury protection laws and hospital management support, it should be possible
to create a safer environment for employees and patients.

Obese Child to Fitness freak
In class VIII, my parents took me to a hospital, to get some
basic check-up done for getting obese. After few lab tests, the advice was diet
and exercise. I did not have enough know-how about how all those things worked.
The only things that I was aware of was I was being asked to eat
less, do yoga while my father's exercising and I was being sneered at in
public.
I once had a dream, I was in a blue dress in front of a
mirror and thin. It just remained that, a dream and an impossibility till
it became true.
After Class XII, I joined Siddha Samadhi Yoga classes with my
mom. After a week, we had to stop eating cooked food. That psyched me so much,
that I could see only through one eye for a couple of weeks. It was a terror to
not eat rice which I ate for so many years of my life, four times a day.
During my first year of undergrad, I weighed 154lb. I swam for a
semester and came to 143lb. But that was all lost enthusiasm, once I got into
the college routine. I came to 159lb by the fourth year. Thats when my friends
and I started going to the gym whenever possible, nothing much happened by way
of weight loss but there was a feel-good factor when we were up in the morning,
when it was so beautiful. Slowly I started eating rotis (tortillas). I can say
that this is the turning point in my life enroute losing weight. By then I had
read in Readers Digest that appetite can be controlled. It was very very hard
to shift to rotis from rice. Living on lots of rice for 20 years, made it
difficult to shift to rotis. With rice, I did not know how much I was
eating. With rotis, I could count.
By the end of that year I reduced to 154lb.
When I was doing my internhsip at Bangalore, my office was 4.5km
away. I had lots of time. I was still a student, so I wasnt comfortable paying
30Rs a day, so I just walked. My mom would tell me that ' I walk without
whining'.. When we go to our village, we
need to walk for a km or more. As a kid I did not have problem doing that
while my sister threw tantrums. Each time we had to walk, my mom praised my
enthusiasm to walk. This somehow increased my interest in walking. I had time
and I kept walking 9km a day. I started losing 1.5lb a month. That is a very
unnoticeable change. But I was told that you will never get this weight back. Walking is
a very good exercise, to get you started. This I did for six months and I kept
working on having only rotis for lunch. By the end of it I got to 143lb.
Still kept walking whenever I could. this was in 2003
In 2006, I didnt know what got onto me. I was a well-prepared
playground for diet and exercise. I kept working out every day on the
elliptical for an hour. As I kept losing weight, I came to see the elliptical as
a fat melting machine. I reached 115lb ... I did not think that was possible.
After all the weight loss, I felt like my legs were made of
hollow-bamboo. Soon people started telling me, that they could not recognise me
or that I was getting smaller and smaller each time they saw me.
Looking through the journey, I realise that once I figured what
worked for me, I kept at it and emerged successful. Later, I went on to do a
rim to rim hike in Grand Canyon. Any weekend with good weather, I had to be out
walking.

“My foot
hit something. I sensed, or thought I sensed, a piece of corrugated metal
roofing down deep in the opaque mud.” – Our Man in Belize: A Memoir, Richard
Timothy Conroy
When someone mentions, metal roofs, corrugated is the
picture that comes to mind.
If you are considering solar panels for your building,
metal
roof is the best. According to the EnergySage, solar
panels can increase the cooling benefits of a metal roof. Together with
eco-friendly London Metal Roofing and the solar panels, you are making your
environment sustainable.
For a more sustainable home, FEMA
suggests metal roofs with a solar reflectance Index (SRI) equal to or greater
than 78 for low-slope and 29 for steep-sloped roofs. The FEMA advisory also
suggests metal roof systems with recycled content. London Metal roofing systems have 25% to 95%
recycled material and are 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan.
Metal roofing is great in places prone to wildfires,
because metal does not catch fire from embers. The catch here is, also a need
to ‘vent’ the fire. Ember
and Flame intrusion resistance through a metal roof can be
countered by metal screens.
Noise due to rain on the metal roofs has been studied
a lot. There is a solution to that too. Copper
roof is the quietest of the metal roofs. Stone coating, air
spaces and insulation make modern metal roofs quiet according to the Smart
Homeowner
In extreme weather conditions, check if your home
owner’s insurance provides discount
for using Weather-Resistant Metal Roofing. Some metal roofs qualify
for Energy Star certification which aims to reduce
energy costs by 30%.
Metal roof that can hold up against all weather
conditions as well as extreme natural disasters are worth a look. Aluminium
roofing is a good option for coastal areas. The metal roofs come with a
wind-rating of up to 140mph.
If you live in a snowy area, snow
retention, might be a concern. Pad style snow guards in
matching colors can be used on sloping metal roofs.
According
to ASC Building products, The 26 gauge metal roofing products
weigh between 0.90 – 1.00 lbs. per square foot. The 29 gauge products weigh
between 0.60 - 0.65 lbs per square foot. Yes, that is lighter than few
years ago.
Compared to shingles, metal roofs come in panels, so
the installation is easier.
As the popularity of metal roof increases, its an
added value to your house. The price pays for itself over years of not
requiring replacement.
Online Learning is Fun
In
high school, we had a lesson by name ‘The Fun they Had’ written by Isaac Asimov
in 1951. Two kids Margie and Tommy, are surprised to know that centuries ago,
the teachers were humans. Their mechanical teacher appears on a computer and teaches
them fractions.
In 2007, while working as an engineer, I took an online
class. It was English literature and Creative Writing classes. In place of
workshop in the class, which is a common form of critiquing your classmate’s
work and offering them feedback for work, Microsoft word was used. Word was convenient
in commenting on the essays as part of the coursework in providing feedback. In
online courses, responding to your classmate’s discussion is a common
requirement of engagement with other students work, to make up for the lack of
face to face interaction.
At that time, I didn’t realize that one of the
benefits was commute time saved. In 2014, I volunteered for Foodbank of Santa
Barba County. I had just read a book on Salesforce. As a campaign management
volunteer online, using what I had just learned, I could make impact sooner
than I could, driving to the Phoenix Zoo, where I volunteered too. That is when
I realized the overhead of commute that could be done away with online
engagements.
Maggie
wonders "And all the kids learned the same thing?"
Few years ago, due to my interest in creative writing,
I saw a parallel in content marketing. I took some digital marketing course on
Lynda.com. Over the holidays, I accomplished a Content Marketing certificate on
Linkedin. The interesting thing, I didn’t have to go research what courses
would be needed for a Content Marketer. It was motivating to see this
researched goal of well-planned courses designed to learn a career path
requirement. Linkedin calls these “learning paths”, a set of courses to equip
the learners with skills needed for a specific role like digital marketer,
small business owner, project manager etc. Irrespective of your background, you
can explore new areas and acquire skills, if you happen to like what you are
learning and become an expert at that.
I now have a certificate on Linkedin that shows this
accomplishment. Being able to share this on social media is like having a
graduation party, where you let others know how you are constantly improving
your skills. With the network effect, there might be some employer or recruiter
interested in filling a job that requires those very latest skills. You have
now taken the oats straight to the horses’ mouth. Even if you are not currently
looking for a job, this continuous learning speaks to your curiosity which is
needed for any job in the current dynamic market and industry conditions. AT&T
CEO Randall Stephenson said in a NYTimes interview that people who don't spend five to 10 hours a week
learning online "will obsolete themselves with technology."
“mother
said little girls learned better if they learned at regular hours.”
Lynda.com acquired by Linkedin urges you to learn a
new skill online, on your time. The courses are taught by industry experts. It
is true to the limitless learning, limitless
possibilities it touts. It shows you how “Learning can happen anywhere with our
apps on your computer, mobile device, and TV, featuring enhanced navigation and
faster streaming for anytime learning”. It is this flexibility and catered to
your schedule learning that speaks to people with a busy schedule. Life
happens while learning. You don’t have to put it on hold.
Around the same time, I took a Poetry class on
Coursera. Modern & Contemporary American Poetry (“ModPo”). Modern & Contemporary American Poetry course from University of
Pennsylvania English professor Al Filreis is a MOOC - "massive open online
course”. A MOOC is a virtual, free class available to Internet users around the
world. What I liked best about the class is the small group discussing the
poetry online. After so many classes, I feel like I know them from their
impromptu discussions. If such an attachment can be made through the online
classes, then we know its not the doom of a ‘mechanical teacher’ but a vibrant
community that interacts through the online forums. Students appreciate the different
perspectives that come with diversity of people from different backgrounds and
nations.
Recently few months ago, I took Economics 101 course
from Stanford University. It was free and online. Learning from John B Taylor
himself was great. He has a great passion for Economics. His hope of passing on
that enthusiasm, keeps you motivated to finish the course. I realized that economics
is fun, and I never had a class on it in my undergrad. You can always add a new
skill to make a full-fledged arsenal through online learning.
“I am learning all the time. The
tombstone will be my diploma.” ~Eartha Kitt.
With our current changing world, there are always new
technologies to learn. You must be a continuous learner. According to
Lynda.com, Educational technology too has evolved to help teachers and students
leverage new technologies and the latest instructional techniques to increase
engagement, be more productive in the classroom and maximize the potential to
learn remotely.
When
Maggie’s mom says, “a teacher has to be adjusted to fit the mind of each boy
and girl it teaches and that each kid has to be taught differently"
The online material lends itself to reuse. You can go
back to them for refreshing your memory, whenever you need to use the concepts.
It also removes the limitation of instructor writing on the blackboard speed
and demands on the voice to reach an audience. A class could be distracting for
some learners. With online learning, if a student thinks, they have not grasped
the concept the first time, they can rewind and listen to the lecture again,
essentially making their own customized teacher.
During a Global Case competition, I was amazed to see
students use slack to collaborate with each other, who were in different parts
of the country. The team also used google Docs, so that each member could
update the report, and everyone could stay up to date on the latest status,
without any rework. Now social media like Facebook groups for class, blogging
for student’s homework assignments, twitter for fun, Instagram for annotating
notes are being used by students for effective learning. Most course material
is available in digital format. You don’t spend as much time in taking notes.
Time is better used in learning the concepts, rather than rushing to take notes
while the professor is teaching in the class. You can count on online learning
for reliable delivery and expedited learning.
Wharton professors have done a study on binge reading on
Coursera. They found that there are two kinds of binging. Temporal binging
where you take module after module at a stretch. Content binging where you
finish all modules of a course on one subject and move on to another. The
research found that the bingers did better on tests. Since the online platforms
release the course at once, instead of traditional episodic format, a student
who is curious and wishes to learn more at once, can pursue the learning at
their own pace, fast or slow, to suit their learning style.
Pat Wadors, senior vice president of global talent
organization at Linkedin wrote an article in Harvard business Review titled,
‘To stay relevant, Your Company and Employees must keep learning.’ Online
learning is effective in workplaces not only when mandatory trainings are to be
done but when new technologies must be taught to employees in waves as they
occur. It is a logistics problem to hold employees captive in a room when the
business is live. With the flexibility offered by online classes, now they can
not only learn all the required things as a supervisor for workplace safety but
also the complexities of benefits and technical knowledge at their own pace.
Pat Wadors has also written that, “AT&T has launched a program that
combines online and classroom-based course work in subjects like digital
networking and data science, and looks at old skills that can be transferred to
new careers.” Many companies now use hybrid format, where employees learn some
modules online and then discuss them with each other through a web conferencing,
to maintain the community interface of learning and amplify the collective
intelligence.
Online learning has changed knowledge management. With
many online group collaboration tools like Google Docs, Skype and others,
learning and working with others remotely is no longer a barrier to a team’s or
organization’s loftier goals of being agile to changes in the marketplace.
Learning has now been democratized with MOOCs. The best universities too have
realized this and made some of their courses available to students worldwide.
In this age, everyone is a learner, novice or an expert.
With all the above reasons in mind, I am doing an
executive MBA online. My kindergarten child still has a non-mechanical teacher.
Even though the mechanical teacher has some time to reach each and every class,
I am sure when that happens, that the teacher will be as much fun as Blippi, a
creative entrepreneur with a background in brand development, digital content
creation, and online marketing whose goal is to bring positive emotions and
memories to the act of learning.
Innovation Management for the 21st century
Over the last decade many buzzwords have been tossed
around in Management books. Servant Leadership, Customer-Driven transformation,
Change Management, Operations Management, Entrepreneurship Management, Customer
Relationship Management, Business Process management, Innovation Management, Brand
Management and many more.
I believe Innovation
Management is the most revolutionary idea in the management industry, as it
is a way encompassing different aspects of an organization. Innovation is no
longer pigeon-holed to technological advances from Research & Development
team. It can come from anywhere and every part of the organization must operate
in the new paradigm of looking for efficient ways of doing things.
In 1995, Clayton Christensen had introduced the term ‘disruptive
innovation’ to the world. “Disruption” describes a process whereby a smaller
company with fewer resources can successfully challenge established incumbent
businesses [1]. In the same HBR article,
‘What is disruptive innovation’, Christensen and Co provide the example of
Apple using an innovative business model. Even though iphone was a sustaining
innovation in the smartphone market, it created a new market for internet
access and eventually was able to challenge laptops as mainstream users’ device
of choice for going online [1].
In the face of such disruption, companies need to always
be on the lookout for changes in the market. Not only that, they need to
develop a road map before disruption takes hold [2]. The top 10
transformational companies, on an average have new growth area with nee revenue
as a % of total revenue at more than 25%. To change track from its core
operations and sustain a new profitable one, a company must use innovation
management for success.
Innovation is a powerful driver for creating value,
competitiveness and profitable growth [3].
In 2014, referring to the confusion of who is a
disruptor and who is not, Clayton Christensen pointed out, that a challenge
being faced by management is lack of common terminology. ISO/TC 279 is the
Innovation Management Standard. ISO 50500 addresses the following seven
principles of an innovative organization [3].
Realization
of Value
Future-
focused leaders
Purposeful
direction
Innovation
Culture
Exploitable
insights
Mastering
Uncertainty
Adaptability.
Transformation of the organization.
An initiative’s value can be realized through project management, program management or
portfolio management [4]. Studies have shown that leaders make decisions in
favor of short term growth to make shareholders happy. Many of the other
innovations like good strategy don’t show results because of the strategy
execution gap where the strategy is set by the upper management and the front-line
mangers are told top down as to what needs to be done without knowing the
ground realities. Change Management
is a response while being proactive is a better way to be prepared for changes
in advance. All these piece meal management efforts have a narrow scope while Innovation Management encompasses the
whole organization’s DNA as well as its outlook.
Until now the Management theories, Management by
Objectives, Zero-based budgeting, Decentralization, Total Quality Management,
Supply Chain Management, Team Downsizing were all looking at inefficiencies in
resource allocation, budget allocation, operations, each in its own little
cloud and not looking at the organization as a whole and its long-term future.
In this whole equation, you don’t hear about the customer and their needs.
In Mapping
Innovation: A Playbook for Navigating a Disruptive Age, Greg Satell talks
about Eric Haller from Experian DataLabs and his unique way of solving
customers problems and then scaling those solutions, thereby enhancing the
company’s portfolio.
With Innovation Management, companies like 3M have
used Lead User Methodology to come
up with breakthrough products. Customer-centric innovation is at the core of
innovation Management. Shapiro adds that a customer-centric strategy demands
that you think about customers’ unmet needs, and about products and services
they may not even realize that they need yet [5]. “This leads to new
products, new services, and new ways of delivering those products and
services,” he adds. Some companies have gone a step further and involved
customers in the brand management through their crowdsourcing methods. Dell’s
Ideastorm, Procter & Gamble’s (P & G) Connect + Develop, My Starbucks
Idea, Unilever Foundry are some of the examples of Corporate sponsored
platforms where ideas are submitted to the sponsor [6]. Crowdsourcing can also
be carried on through Intermediate platform providers like Spigit, Innocentive
and Ideaconection, who have vibrant communities of cross-discipline inventors.
Have you seen how we moved from concepts to people?
The most important part of the Innovation Management is the human pulse where
ideas and the inventors count.
‘Unleashing
innovation in big organizations could also be called ‘How to Not Waste Human
Potential’.” – Alexander Osterwalder.
By following the ISO/TC 279 standards of Innovation
Management, we will have organizations that are robust yet agile. Since
everyone has a say in the innovation culture, the employees will be engaged and
the vast human potential will be put to good use.

Plucked
A woman's life is filled with many things alien to men. History of hair removal is fascinating. There was a time when all of the eyebrows were plucked too.
In college, I remember vaguely using Anne French hair removal cream only to be repelled by its smell. Over the years, the makers have learned to use Lemon, Turmeric , Rose and Sandal which should make it aromatic. Bar that waxing, razor, tweezer or epilator are the other choices. If you are faint of heart, then waxing is not for you.
Fast forward to now, with time and technology, we have arrived at Braun Epilator....
