Antoni: Let's Do Dinner

Antoni: Let's Do Dinner

Love this Light salads book by Antoni Porowski. Do you have any questions for him? Reply to me with your question by Feb 17, 2021 evening. The time for questions is over. I only got to see him for 10 minutes coking sphaghetti squash in his kitchen, in a college event, he can talk food. the gusto he brings to the ingredients in a recipe and how they go well with each other.. No wonder he is a chef.
I made boiled eggs with green beans from the recipe in this book. Picky child liked it too. I love french cut beans. Took the opened frozen packet as an opportunity to add some more green beans into the dumpling curry.
Lentil soup with coconut milk sounds interesting.

Mushroom Mapo tofu with this Vegan SOEOS Sichuan Pixian Boad Bean aka Doubanjiang Chili Paste.

What cookbooks does Antoni have in his house?

Cravings by Chrissy Teigen
Make it ahead by Ina garten
Feast by Nigella Lawson, whose upcoming Cook, Eat, Repeat: Ingredients, Recipes, and Stories is very poignant.

What chopping block does he use?

Thats right Boos Block by John Boos.

That sandwich with cheese on top. ooh

Protein Head, Protein Stem

If you cant go for the head, go for the stem

If you got a flu shot and it still didnt work. You might have heard How flu shot needs to be made anew each year. MIT researches found a way to solve that by going for the stem instead of the protein.

"If the antibodies could bind to the stable protein “stem” instead of its changeable “head,” they could protect against any flu strain, and people wouldn’t need to get new shots year after year."

If you are expecting a hydra looking thing, imagine a mushroom .

"The mushroom-shaped protein specializes in infecting cells, first by binding a trio of sites on its head to three separate sugar molecules on the surface of targeted cells. Once the virus latches on, parts of HA’s stem act as a grappling hook to pull the virus in close, allowing it to fuse with the cell membrane and release its contents inside."

Blind Ambition: How to Go from Victim to Visionary

Blind Ambition: How to Go from Victim to Visionary by Chad E Foster.

Enjoyed this book a lot. Chad struck a good balance between covering his guide dog, his corporate excellence, the struggles he had to face in turning from victim to visionary. Its triple path book of overcoming your blindspots, achieving career excellence, revealing your true and multiple idnetities to self that are as energizing as your working self. Interesting to learn how the bidding process is done. Amazing to know how your trailblazer path can be scaled to open new paths for others.

After a long time, I have come across a book as powerful as Erik Weihenmayer's.

If I could ask for world knowledge organization ...

Sometimes for example, yesterday I came across Tsimane in a tweet.. and I wanted to know more about them.. I had to stitch a coherent idea about them.. looking up books.google.com, wiki and so on.. A magic wand could pull all these sources into one article.

I was reading about ROI of groceries from 1950s and I wanted to see the trend.. but some graph had ROE. I was able to find last years and 2013s.

As an MBA student, I feel that .. paragraphs with numbers could be translated to graphs.. This is probably available with NLP..

But in the large scheme.. its how the ideas are related.

Personally I am interested in how people get creative and innovative. What of the forces then, made those discoveries possible. If there is a timeline of things what happened uptil then.. and what could happen only in the future, waiting for some things to happen. Especially parallel discoveries.

A traverse graph from idea to another.. that can collapse or expand sources – based on the topic of interest.

In the second art work by this artist https://www.spotlightonlake.com/posts/chesterton-art-center-host-through-my-eyes-works-linda-lee-ligocki-october

There are many layers to it. They are laid on each other to create a final different composition. But each in itself a different color to is a painting. So if we had the whole knowledge trove, if we could separate them into distinct planes with their own theme.

Back to the book. After you start reading the book, you will be excited to tell me that the actors in the article and the book, Peter Thiel and Rene Girard are the same.

Grocery store ROI trend

In Becoming Trader Joe, according to Dun & Bradstreet, typical grocer's return on investment was 54% in the early 1950s. It has declined now to 9-15% in 2020.

Becoming Trader Joe: How I Did Business My Way and Still Beat the Big Guys

Becoming Trader Joe: How I Did Business My Way and Still Beat the Big Guys by Joe Coulombe

Joe has a great sense of humor.

1. Product Knowledge

He also has great product knowledge which helped him in doing unparalleled deals. Breaking the mold of existing product category and being able to sell has the same advantage as making a new product category.
Great statement about being steeped in brands. Personally I love brands too, which you can probably tell.

2. Customer Zone

If your customers get you that the value is in the product and not the packaging, you have found your right customer zone. He calls it helping the "public buy it right". Sometimes like with maple syrup, he got a better product and other times, even when labelled second quality butter, he could still make it sell like premium.

3. Creative Marketing

You can see it with his toolset as chapters of the book.

4. Principle of Discontinuity

The WEIRDest People in the World: How the West Became Psychologically Peculiar and Particularly Prosperous

I came across this Tsimane reference in this book. I got curious about Tsimane and found that they have been studied in Alcohol and Humans: A long social affair about how they share chicha, a local drink but not water as easily. Because of their lack exposure to The oxford handbook of critical concepts in music theory, they have been studied to understand the concepts of consonance and dissonance when not exposed to western environment. Healthy hearts have been another of their ahcievements.

Funny that the chips actually began to be made to sell the salsa. Some unique things about these chips are that they are made with rice bran oil and its benefits of no cholesterol.

Moving Machines: 10 Mega Models to Construct

Moving Machines: 10 Mega Models to Construct

My daughter and I made a pulley from this. My neighbor made the Lever and robotic arm. when she got confused she would always say that and ask for help. It was a little bit of mental jog for me to look at the final picture and hen see where the nuts and bolts should go. It is a fun project for kids. Like how they say you have to go down to climb the mountain, here to go forward ie to actually mvoe in the present, you have to look in the future and also look back to revise, if you have done it correctly. In the robotic arm, one said was moving well, while the other wasnt, which is what revealed, how the whole system works. When the tooth gears align, it moves well. When they are stuck, it doesnt. The reason for it was one of the gears under duress broke out of the gear mold and wouldnt go in under the top circle and hence the lack of mobility. Great way to engage kids, learn how things work and asking for help when you need it.

Always be learning

Talking to a high school student, I learned about Contour trenching and loose boulder structures as ways to prevent quick water runoff in hilly areas.

ALIEN Thinking: The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas

ALIEN Thinking: The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas

Its amazing that a diseases like Ebola can still be controlled by watching how it breaks the body down and countering it with electrolytes and other medicines. It is the system that needs caring and not the specific danger.
You will learn lots of lessons and takeaways like this from many of the examples in the book.
Listen to the Owlet's story where they kept learning about not ignoring all the stakeholders. Once they figured out the different stakeholders and their roles, they creatively kept themselves floating till the right approvals were met by defeaturing their product meanwhile.
Terracycle Negative cost marketing, where content will do.
How are innovatorss able to do this? They use ALIEN thinking. "These five patterns—Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation—lead to a fresh and flexible approach to problem-solving."
In the initial chapters, you learn about each pattern of thinking. Then you move onto recognizing all the patterns in one solution.
The strategies & tactics and tips & tricks for each of these patterns of thinking, should get you started with applying those techniques for your products and problems.
Loved the examples in the book showing the process of coming up with innovative ideas. Very accesible book with ideas from different industries.
