The key to keep your speeches Goldilocks

If you struggle with keeping your speeches short, you can take a look at the transcript of a TED talk to get an idea of how long it takes to introduce and get into the mock meat of the speech.

A rough approximation is 10 seconds for a full line.

A colleague shared the technique of timing, reading my speech aloud. It worked for me.

The Cave story

Leonardo and the Whale excerpt shows the effect the Whale Fossil had on Leonardo at the end of the chapter.

Whale Fossils found near Tuscany

I used this as a speech material for Toastmasters.

In Florence, Leonardo Da Vinci chanced upon a dark cave and pondered

Should I enter?

Having wandered some distance across gloomy rocks, he came to the mouth of a great cavern.

He stood astonished in front of it for some time.

Bending back and forth, he tried to see if he could discover anything inside, but the darkness within prevented that.

Suddenly he felt two contrary emotions

Fear – of the threatening dark cave

desire – to see whether there were any marvelous thing within

Desire won.

His unstoppable curiosity triumphed and Leonardo went into the cave.

Embedded in the wall is a fossil whale.

“Oh mighty and once-living instrument of nature

Your vast strength was to no avail

you must abandon your tranquil life to obey the law which God and time gave to creative nature.

Of no avail are your branching, sturdy dorsal fins with which you pursue your prey,

plowing your way, tempestuously tearing open the briny waves with your breast.

Walter Isaac says that this whale fossil triggered a dark vision of what would be throughout his life, one of his deepest forebodings, that of an apocalyptic deluge.

Talking of the power held by the long dead-whale

Oh, how many a time the terrified shoals of dolphins and big tuna fish were seen to flee before your insensate fury,

“ You lashed with swift, branching fins and forked tail,

Creating in the sea sudden tempests that buffeted and submerged ships”

“Oh time, swift despoiler of all things

How many kings

How many nations hast thou undone

And how many changes of states and of circumstances have happened since this wondrous fish perished”

in this winding and cavernous recess? Now unmade by time you lie patiently in this closed place with bones stripped and bare, serving as an armature for the mountain placed over you

At this point Leonardo’s fears were about a realm far different from whatever dangers might be lurking inside the cave. Instead they were driven by an existential dread in the face of the destructive powers of nature. He began scribbling rapidly, using a silverpoint on a red tinted page, describing an apocalypse that begins with water and ends with fire.

“the rivers will be deprived of their waters,

the earth will no longer put forth her greenery

the fields will no more be decked with waving corn

all the animals, finding no fresh grass for pasture, will die”

In this way the fertile and fruitful earth will be forced to end

With the element of fire

And then its surface will be left burnt up to cinder

And this will be the end of all earthly nature”

The dark cave that Leonardo’s curiosity compelled him to enter offered up both scientific discoveries and imaginative fantasies, strands that would be interwoven throughout his life.

Lessons from cooking Dhaba style Paneer

Paneer

Usually when we use Gopi Paneer, we move it from the freezer to the non freezer side of the refrigerator a day before.
Unexpectedly, I had to cook for more vegetarians. Paneer is a special dish but its in the freezer. I tried the defrost for about 7-8 min and it worked wonders. Like I bought myself a gone day in this respect of having th paneer soft.

This recipe turned out great but I learned that the circumference of the vessel makes a difference. I used a very wide pan that the frying of the masalas wasnt very good. For my next curry, I used a smaller pan where I could see right away the missed chance of making a good dripping gravy.
I was thinking about my cooking and I realized that it is very unique in the sense that I never repeat the dishes. This realization is from a table topics from a Toastmaster meeting where the theme was to talk of an item picked from a bag, in an Antiques Roadshow style where a participant said that the yo-yo looking thing was from the cave (with reference to the Leonardo Cave speech I gave few minutes before). He said that it was never used by anyone before and hence its unique. Coming back to the cooking , I like to try new recipes each time.

In this recipe, there is the first part about cooking the Besan aka Chickpea Flour a bit, to remove the raw taste. Again the size of the dish.. I thought that if I did that in a wider pan, then it would stick to the pan and would be difficult to handle. Whoever has learnt how to transfer stuff from big pans into smaller ones.. I cooked it in a very small pan used for seasoning.

And there they were.. the lumps in the besan. Luckily they were too small to interfere with the taste. I grated both the onions and tomato which turned out to be better for cooking them well. One of the guests liked it. I forwarded him the link to the recipe. Try how much I might, instead of doing the same recipe and perfecting it, I would want to do something that I havent made in that style before.

Little Hoo has the Flu

Little Hoo has the Flu

Aww Little Hoo, hope you get well soon. After reading 'Happy Easter Little Hoo', we couldnt bear that Little Hoo had the flu. The first page is a foreshadow of all the things that are going to be involved in the story. take time to go over them at first, so you feel good when you fidn the objects in the pages later on.
Very well done story and illustrations. Just came back from a mini visit to a friend with cold, so the story resonated that Little Hoo needs a rest and cant play with friends.

Happy Easter, Little Hoo!

What a little fun book. The first page is awesome with all the colorful patterns of Easter eggs. Little Hoos has to find the hidden eggs. For little readers, this book helps in 3 ways.
1. They searcha nd find the eggs
2. They identify the places the ggs are hidden and learn the usage of high, low and so on
3. In the end, they get to count the treasure.
Very thoughtfully written beautiful book.

The Boy and the Egg

The Boy and the Egg is a very cute story.
The illustrations are lovely.
The first page full of eggs with just some features or limbs sticking out is funny and mysterious. Spend some time on the first page, to name the animas that might be hiding in the egg. This will bear fruit when you go on with the story and find out if your guesses were right.
You can even count the occurences of a kind on that page. The funniest one has to be the fish.
What do you think is going to hatch out of the egg, the boy found?
