Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries H

Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries

Juane Trippe for aviation, Edward Land for Polaroid - both did research for their projects using New York public Library.
Loonshots deals with 'The Needham' question. Why did the renaissance happen in England and not elsewhere, even though there was similar talent in other parts of the world.
If you have done phase theory of things, then you'll find the transition easier to understand from underdogs to champions.
What does it take for an idea to be nurtured - the funding, but what are the investors most likely to go after. s-type and p-type loonshots.
Bahcall has a great way of making scientific things easier to undersand for the comon man - polaroid.
There are comparisions in many industries - Airline industry - American Airlines vs PanAm, what was the difference in their approach? How the movie industry and the science-pharma split when they got big. The rift between production and disruption. How many slip out in The scale Chasm.
I am very impressed with the huge section of Appendix.

Tracy Anderson

Tracy Anderson's workout is something that you will have to do slow as, these movements might be all new. Tracy's method is all about "strengthening the small, accessory muscles".

Bill Marriott: Success Is Never Final--his Life and the Decisions That Built a Hotel Empire

When great grand parent of Mariott was out of money on the ship, she worked on the ship to earn her meals. This eking out made an impression on her family.

How to engage your customers?

When Willard found that his customers at root beer stand wanted to know about Lucky Lindy, he brought a counter top radio so they could stay engaged with the news they were interested in.

Its amazing how Bill knew what should happen next - starting off with the root beer stand, after looking at lemonade sales , countertop radio at the root beer stand so his customers can engage with Lucky Lindy news, noticing that airline travelers liked to carry his food and then convincing the airlines to buy his food. He knew how to align his dominoes.

Two buckets for mopping - one for clean water and the other for dirty water.

Christa DiPaolo exercises

When I started boxing workout, it felt like a casual thing as the ladies in the video or talking. I didnt pick it in this video, but the 1lb exercises are cute.
In this cardio boxing workout, Christa makes you realise that when you have to focus on what move to do next, you lose track of the time.
I added a 3lb weight each side, to the Kenpo Cardio. Within 10 min into the workout, I realised how tired I got. Those weights work.
While I dont have 1 lb at home, I recalled a 2.5 pound purple dumbbells from a zumba workout. Lets see how that goes.
Christa is a big fan of  Reaction drills. You will love them too.

You can do kick-boxing in the garden with Christa Dipaolo, With moon and stars as the witness, you can exercise your body and soul.

It is so relaxing to hear the birds in the garden. I dont want to go inside. The red of the siskin throat, like the sunset.

Before you can process

What is happening

an orange is cut in half
a nail is wedged in
synchronously by 4 people
An onionis chopped
like a snowfall
A watermelon gets a
methodical clean shave
mail gets into every box
dishes align into the
dish dryer rack
A falafel hops into a
frog mouthed pita
pizzas get sliced
windows get wiped
as clockwork
bills get counted
(its not that everyone
can do it)

Sandcastles with feet

How do you make sadcastles with your feet?

Put one foot forward, surround it with mud, pack it, press it, shape it and slowly pull your leg out just like this machine with rollers, when the arch is getting done.

Road Repair patches

HO Rocky's Road Repair Woodland Scenics

Whenever I see patches on the road, I get happy and grateful at the same time that someone cares about the maintenance of the road.

A stitch in time saves nine

Today my kid was so excited to share that she saw community workers digging the road. Her father corrected her that they were laying the road.

We wince when we ride on broken roads but the patched roads always light me up as much or more.

Truncated Square Pyramid

Truncated Square Pyramid

The pyramid problem

Imaginary Line

Yesterday I heard myself say something havent said in decades

Draw an imaginary line

While saying that I drew a dotted line joining the opposite sides of a rhombus - parallelogram. When I explained the parallel lines, we agreed that the parallel lines meet at infinity, where there is a pirate.

When I said

Draw an imaginary line

My daughter said she did.
She did draw the imaginary line in her head.

We started with a triangle with unit area.
It was easy to say the parallelogram has 2 units area.

Then came a hexagon. 6 . Great.

Imagine the triangle doing a hop around each side. 6 sides. 6 units of area

We are learning surveying here. I remember high school problems where we had to split the random shapes into trapeziums. (I think I just figured why trapeze is called a trapeze. when it swings in either direction, it makes that shape. )

Then came a huge shape. We saw that it was symmetrical.
If we solve half the problem then, we will know the other.
We went around tracing the given shapes - triangle or rhombus into the half of the random shape and worked out the answer. Luckily, the answer was written but it didnt show, how that was arrived at.

We traced the actual shape on the back of the paper, so we could freely go about solving the problem. After having solved the problem, I recalled Einstein not being happy with just one solution but looking at the haystack for all the needles that mght be there.

We realised that there are other symmetries, so the problem could be solved differently. Finding alternate ways of solving a problem, is a validation of your prior solution.

We learned to not freak out at a big problem

 Divide and Rule.

Petit Collage My Crafty Toy Camera Kit

Petit Collage My Crafty Toy Camera Kit

A camera is a fascinating thing for kids and adults alike. This toy camera kit has pictures of how to go about making the flat cardboard into a toy camera.
The stickers are fun to add some color to your camera. You can get more creative by decorating the camera however you wish.
The best of all are the cardstock tiny blank photos that you cna draw however and give them to your subjects you photograph.
This is a cool toy. Kids take to it very easily. When you go to friends and relatives house, make some pictures of them before hand and look at the surprise, when you hand them pictures. Carry some crayons along and match the colors of the dress they are wearing that day. Call them that the picture is 'developing'.
One small hitch was that the closing flap at the back of the camera was on the opposite side of what is in the picture. We went ahead with it, and it still turned out fine as the up and down sides are unique and clear.
What a great way to make your kids more observant, cognizant of the threes rule and other framing tips of photography.

I have never heard of Moules Frites. I have heard of Fish and Chips and had them at a Renaissance festival. If you spend some time in Ghent, this should be somehtign you try according to the NYTimes.

Your Flight is Delayed

Your Flight is Delayed

Passur "calculated these times by combining publicly available data about weather, flight schedules, and other factors with proprietary data the company itself collected, including feeds from a network of passive radar stations it had installed near airports to gather data about every plane in the local sky."

The rocket science of flight delay predictions.
