Patterns

Approximation and appropriaton

To simplify the elements of a scene that you see into 3 objects.
Look at your feet as the author mentor says. There is a painting of such an impression in the book. And now I understand the treasure that lies at our feet.
There are many techniques in the book to create wonderful paintings. The author says that painting is for when you are at loss of words. But once you do the paintings, you will find yourself itching to express in words too.
There are works by many artists in the book. That brings a variety of perspectives.

Pinning the flag of a poem in time

Thy Living hand
Today a friend recalled the Hindi movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag as Run, Milkha Run which is a true translation. This triggered another snippet from another friend about someone saying why do you burn my blood which in literal Hindi is indicative of seething with anger.

This poem Thy Living hand reminded me of that with its blood flow. The power of this poem is from its use of time dimension. The holding out of the hand eternally.

The desired fruit

..Create the tree from which such a fruit would fall - Paul Valery

In Zoe's first spring book of Sesame Street,
The leaves fall
from the tree and gather
below uniquely
from the cloud of leaves
with no form to themselves
Will the leaf go back to
the oblivion where the
fruit is desired.

Stand up Tragederian learns comedy

With the neon light arrows for each chapter, the book is really show. The illustrations along with the lists and Louie's versions of dictionaries of words made up by him are funny and can be used as a template by young readers to make their own lists and words.
Louie's family and friends falling in and out of support eventually make his dream of performing from in the closet to in front of a public come true.

Make like a tree and leave

A colleague said '... does not make?'. I said shakespeare? He then said few sentences in Shakespeare language with forsooth and yonder and then I realised, you know a language when you can speak in it.
In the end he said 'make like a tree and leave'.

Puffed rice diet

On a diet have you ever felt like an orphan? I am in between diets now and looks like I've taken refuge of puffed rice diet.

Organic gardener

Author Jeanne Nolan has transformed from an inaccessible person on a communal farm to a person who makes the organic dream accessible for the common people. Her story of extremes is healing without unsettling the reader. She keeps the reader at a remove, protecting them from the dark times she faced in life but teaches us all about the nourishing farming. Her journey is also an example of sustainable business.

A frozen time in crystal cube

When the author writes, her mom was accepted only by ASU. I felt like I was reading my story. Having been in Tempe and close to Apache Blvd, I was instantly hooked to the book. Even though I am a bee for food, this book had stronger currents of family relations. There are many dishes and recipes but none stick in your mind. More than food, its about the tug of war with desire - for food - food you cant have, food that makes you fat or thin. The desire extends to love, happiness.
I havent read the author's fiction, but the non-fiction does show her as a child feeling her independent self in her 40s. The author recreates all the places she's lived in and the places that left an effect on her. You can imagine the 3 week vacation on an island with the breezeway. It must have something to do with her fiction skills.
In a very Anna Quindlen `Lots of Candles, plenty of cake', Christensen's memoir is written from that place of warmth physically and emotionally, where one is content with life thus far.

Cave art

A very interesting exercise in this book is to extend cave art to other animals and other drawings like seascapes, landscapes.
In poetry, you could create poems with an erstwhile standard.
